Pilot reviews of Fadmoor (Moors National Park) Airfield
I called Mr Johnson for PPR and he very kindly accepted our Cessna 152. We extended our trip sightseeing along the east coast and popped round Whitby a few times before finding our way to Fadmoor. I had previous experience landing at great oakley on the southeast coast but this was something else. As I called downwind I honestly thought I may not get in due to the large gradient from 20 threshold! .... Seeing as the wind was blowing approximately 180 at about 20knots and 20 offers aproximately 950m of grass I thought I may not have the cahoonas to actually get in here ... as a baby pilot this was a nice challenging landaway and it taught me to handle the aircraft on the side of a hill! The parking is also on a hill but as a girl I was naturally going to struggle ;-)..... Mr Johnson invited us in and he and his wife were extremely welcoming. What a lovely airfield to visit! ....
After calling Mr Johnson the owner for PPR set off from Newcastle via Fishburn then into Fadmoor for the first time. Mr Johnson happy to give us PPR in our PA28 after checking if we had grass airfield experience. It was a beautiful day and landing on 20 which is on the edge of an escarpment and downhill was quite an experience and the take off was equally exhilarating.....not for the fainthearted or inexperienced pilot....would like to return and maybe spend more time in a nearby cottage which Mr Johnson has for rent.
Beautiful part of North Yorks moors. No one around at the time of our brief visit.
Runways in good condition but PPR essential as advised in Pooleys to give permission and up to date info re runways.
