Abingdon Airfield
Abingdon Airfield is classed as semi active. The resident RAF 612VGS Motorglider School fly most weekends & the odd week during summer months.
It is a emergency diversion ground for Grob Tutors from Benson, and is used fairly regular by Merlin,Puma, the odd Apache & Chinook Helicopters during weekdays tho some weeks are busier than others....& keep a check on NOTAMS too. The Army use the airfield from time to time for exercises with their trucks etc.
This now large charity event recently celebrated its tenth anniversay on Sun 3rd May 2009, which was dominated by the presence of a RAF 99Sqn C17! Many attractions both in the air & on the ground are gathered & around 10,000 people visited.
The runway length has been shortened from its original length - the main 18/36 runway is now approx 5911ft (from displaced 36 threshold to end of 18)& secondary 08/26 is approx 3500ft (from displaced 26 threshold to end of 08)..
CAUTION: Army peri fence approx 15ft high across 26 before displaced threshold..
No permanent Air Traffic control is in use, but the resident 612VGS operate on 122.1mhz on the weekends, & Benson provide service for Military movements on a seperate channel.

Latest review
“ | I flew into the 2011 Abingdon show in my JodelDR200 from Enstone, a fantastic event, really well organised with lots of visiting GA aircraft from all over the country. The marshalling was carried out by the Vintage aircraft club very professionally. Lots of attraction to see and many trade stalls. The day was finished of with a 4 hour flying display culminating with Vulcan. ” |
