Visited Alderney (EGJA) from Netherthorpe (EGNF) on 14/07/2014 in G-ROLY a C172 based at Netherthorpe. Routing was via DTY VOR then over Brize and onto POMPI and ORIST RNAV waypoints.
No issues at all apart from the very early departure meaning many LARS units were still closed.
Jersey gave us a direct route to Alderney from ORIST, we were crossing the channel at FL60 (in line with the Quadrantal rules still in place in the UK.
Landing was on runway 26 and we exited via Bravo and tower asked for the fuel bowser to attend to us. Card payment was accepted with no issues for the cheap VAT free fuel. We then cleared customs via the Fire station and paid the £15 landing fee (reduced due to fuel uplift).
We headed into town and hired two mountain bikes at £7 each for 4 hours and cycled around the whole island and then had a lovely lunch.
I'd asked the fire station to charge my GoPro but they had forgot to plug it in I think, anyway I managed to get it back and then contacted the tower to enquire if I could do a circuit prior to the crew change or the return journey. This was no problem despite a steady stream of commercial traffic throughout the day.
The guides mention a route crossing at Le Touquet and following the French coast but in my opinion this is a long way round to go, fly direct and be sensible, it is no more dangerous than flying above an overcast layer even in a SEP.
Overall a really nice day and an excellent island to visit. The tourist office were really helpful and it was clear that everyone was keen for us to return which we will be, soon I hope!
