Stephen Nuttall - 0.5 NM North of Inskip VRP - Fly from Blackpool
“ | Flew into Barrow on Monday 12 August for a business meeting at one of the dockyards. I have been into Barrow, (Walney) several times over the years and can't believe that no one, (including me!) has done a review so far.
I can't comment on the use at weekends, but during the week, the airfield is used by BAe Systems, (formerly Vickers shipbuilding) as a base for a couple of King Airs. However, with 24 hours PPR, flying in is no issue. Company flights have priority, and opening hours fit with them, but expect something like 07.00 to 17.00 local. Landing fee was £12.00 for a DR400/100, (800kg MAUW), there are no facilities for visitors other than a toilet and, (if you are nice to the controllers), use of their kitchen for a cup of tea or coffee.
There is an ILS and NDB at the airfield, but they are ONLY for use by the company aircraft and are not published for other users. The runway and taxiways are in very good condition and the welcome is always very friendly. They booked me a taxi on arrival and it was with us in 5 minutes and cost only £5 to get into town/docks.
I have used it as a destination to walk the dogs in the past and it is very close to the beach, but in reality, certainly on weekdays, Barrow is a business destination rather than a pleasure destination.
