Finally managed to fly to the Isle of Wight on Tuesday 29th May 2012 in a C172, G-ROLY from Netherthorpe (EGNF). Lots of cloud en-route but we went VMC on top. Tried obtaining a LARS from Bournemouth after loosing contact with Farnbrough radar but was told Solent would assist me instead. Busy arriving and a bit of a bottle neck and this was mid week!. The A/G service was not operational so we all called blind. Easy to spot after coasting out and we joined right base for runway 30. Parked up on the grass parking area and had a friendly welcome in the club house. We were advised we needed a taxi to The Beach Hut cafe which cost us £5. We did not. It was an easy walk back. Lovely views and menu at The Beach Hut despite the taxi driver not knowing about it and the airfield staff suggesting we go to the Crab and Lobster instead. Back to the airfield admiring the views and we had to walk right over to the south side of the airfield to drop an envelope in a drop box for the £15 landing fee. The drop box was hard to find and we ad to ask someone. Do not know why they could not arrange for a drop box in the tower building as well.
No briefing or internet access which is not good, as it was difficult to check the en-route weather for the return leg.
Anyway a great airfield, will definitely be back to the Isle of Wight and Bembridge will probably be my preferred choice but not tried Sandown yet.

s this.
