Back at Bembridge

Having visited last in November 2017 a return visit was overdue. Website details are unchanged from my previous review and a prompt email acknowledgement confirmed we had successfully PPR'd.

On coasting out from the mainland a radio call was made to "Bembridge Radio" but it was evidently unattended. A helpful local pilot explained that calls should be made to "Bembridge Traffic" instead - effectively everyone approaches, departing or in the circuit needed to contribute to overall situational awareness.

As is often the case, 3 aircraft converged shortly after 12 noon, presumably all in search of the $ 100 hamburger (as the Americans are accustomed to calling their flights - not for the cost of the food but the cost of the fuel to get there and back).

On a Wednesday in February, The Propeller Inn Pub is open (effectively it is on the airfield) and is really very nice - lunch is around a tenner per head and they will also take a separate (cash) landing fee which goes in an envelope.

The tarmac runway 12 is a pronounced downhill gradient and it is worth noting that the adjacent grass is full of ruts, with some mole hills and small depressions - so take care when taxi-ing around the grass - it's all perfectly manageable - just keep your momentum up (the grass is long) and your speed down. More farmers strip on the grass than a manicured aerodrome surface.... it is after all the Isle of Wight !

Definitely worth a visit

We flew into Bembridge on 14 Aug 2016 from Denham. It was a standard overhead join for Rwy 12. There wasn't much traffic by the time we got there (12:40L). The views flying into Bembridge were terrific and communication with A/G radio was helpful. The radio station is parked on the south side of the airfield, next to the parking lot for the Propeller Inn. Landing fees £15.

The Propeller Inn has reopened recently and was quite busy. We had decided earlier to go into town, but were unable to find a cab at the time. We walked (35mins) to the Crab and Lobster Inn, where we had a very nice lobster lunch. The food and the service were both excellent. Later decided to walk back to the airfield along the beach (50+ mins leisurely walk) then climbing up via quite a steep ramp-like walkway.

We got back to the airfield by about 4pm, but radio was no longer manned. We made blind calls and were talking to Solent Radar just after departure.

Definitely worth a visit.

Finally managed to fly to the Isle of Wight on Tuesday 29th May 2012 in a C172, G-ROLY from Netherthorpe (EGNF). Lots of cloud en-route but we went VMC on top. Tried obtaining a LARS from Bournemouth after loosing contact with Farnbrough radar but was told Solent would assist me instead. Busy arriving and a bit of a bottle neck and this was mid week!. The A/G service was not operational so we all called blind. Easy to spot after coasting out and we joined right base for runway 30. Parked up on the grass parking area and had a friendly welcome in the club house. We were advised we needed a taxi to The Beach Hut cafe which cost us £5. We did not. It was an easy walk back. Lovely views and menu at The Beach Hut despite the taxi driver not knowing about it and the airfield staff suggesting we go to the Crab and Lobster instead. Back to the airfield admiring the views and we had to walk right over to the south side of the airfield to drop an envelope in a drop box for the £15 landing fee. The drop box was hard to find and we ad to ask someone. Do not know why they could not arrange for a drop box in the tower building as well. No briefing or internet access which is not good, as it was difficult to check the en-route weather for the return leg. Anyway a great airfield, will definitely be back to the Isle of Wight and Bembridge will probably be my preferred choice but not tried Sandown yet.

Flew into Bembridge for the first time from RAF Halton. Landing fees slightly on the high side perhaps, but what an incredible destination. Mid finals and still over water was a new experience for me!

I am prompted to write to counter the previous negative review.

Three of us flew from Kemble to Bembridge in September for a day out. What a lovely experience it was, to have a GA airfield that is only a 20 minute walk from town and seaside!

The location,as well as the approach over Portsmouth and the Solent, is breathtaking and there is a lot of interest at the airfiled itself.

We landed at midday, walked to the village and along the harbour front, had a lovely lunch, strolled back and, after a coffee and weather check, took off for Kemble around 4pm.

I'm afraid the previous reviewer is out of touch with Landing Fees in 2010. Yes, Bembridge's went up in the summer but it's typical now for a SEP aircraft (regardless of POB).

Definitely an airfield that I and my friends will visit again.

I flew from Cranfield to Bembridge for the first time on Saturday. Although the airfield is unlicensed at weekends, A/G was operating as normal. We were warmly welcomed and the landing fee for a PA38 was a very reasonable £7.50. We had a pleasant lunch at the airfield and then took a short walk to the beach at Whitecliff Bay which I would definitely recommend doing.

To conclude, Bembridge was an excellent day out and I hope to visit again in the near future!

I visited Bembridge today, what a fantastic place. AG radio is excellent and very friendly, even with a 'Welcome to Bembridge' as I landed. It was VERY busy today, what a fantastic sight to see in the region of 60 light aircraft visiting. Bembridge airport has a nice patio and restaurant, which you can either sit inside, or outside and watch the planes. It is a short taxi ride (£5) to the crab and lobster pub, where you can eat on the clifftop overlooking the sea. Then only a short walk to the beach.

All at Bembridge were very friendly and helpfull on a recent visit. Its not as busy or as scenic as Sandown where the welcome is also excellent, not to mention the fab restuarant. Its a better chioce sometime though as theres a long hard runway which is 90 degrees different to Sandown

Just joined UKGA but felt it worth mentioning my fist visit to Bembridge in November 2006. Beautiful afternoon for only my third trip after getting the license so a bit apprehensive but everyone was most helpful. Every man and his dog seemed to be out that afternoon so departure took some time as the run up and runway exit are at the same spot - there was a bit of a queue but everyone seemed to take in their stride. This was literally a flying visit but I will be back. Photo on approach taken by my daughter - good shot Siobhan!
