Bodmin Airfield (EGLA)

Submitted by: Mike Mold
Enjoyed the 1940's style hangar dance on Sat. 1st July 2006 as part of the PFA 60th anniversary celebrations. Thoroughly recommend the top quality B&B at The Stables, Welltown, a couple of miles from the field, under the extended centre line on climb out from RW13. Two double rooms, en-suite, plus excellent breakfast. Contact Roger & Hester Dell'Erba on 01208-821316. They will pick you up from & drop you back to the club.

Bodmin Airfield accepts genuine emergency and precautionary diversions without charge per CAA CAP 667 9.2 (c) recommendations.

My flying buddy and I flew into Bodmin on 25 July 2019 from Dunkeswell, where we were based for a week. My (limited)experience of flying in Cornwall is that the weather can be very localized and fickle and can change quickly. We flew along the coast and over Tintagel in brilliant sunshine, turned south for Bodmin only to encounter increasing cloud to the extent that we were in and out of IMC on approach to the airfield. Predictably it was quiet with hardly anything going on, although a helicopter and another light aircraft departed while we were there. The clubhouse was deserted and when we paid the landing fee the radio operator said we could make a tea/coffee in the kitchen. He reckoned the weather was only going to get worse so with the cloud already at about 500 ft agl I didn't want to hang around a)because we couldn't find any milk in the fridge and b)I was PF for the departure and didn't want to get stuck there if the famous Bodmin Moor fog descended to ground level. After taking off I leveled at 500 ft to stay visual, flew about 5 miles east and broke back out into glorious sunshine and blue skies. I was pleased to have visited and got it into the logbook and, to be fair, we didn't see the airfield at its best in those conditions but the runway was fine, the welcome was friendly and I could see from the notices in the clubhouse that this airfield is probably a thriving and lively one. Certainly well worth a visit.
