“ | Visited Bolt Head Airfield on 26 July 2019 after two previous attempts were thwarted by persistent low cloud over the airfield whilst everywhere else was pretty clear - unusual apparently, guess we were just unlucky. Anyway we flew in from Dunkeswell in a 152 and made an uneventful approach over the water to Runway 29 (grass)which at 620m is plenty long enough. There is a hangar with about half a dozen resident aircraft and nothing else really - apart from a cold war bunker that was built to serve as a government command center in the event of a nuclear attack. Fascinating looking place and I would love to be able to look around inside it sometime. We walked from the airfield over a couple of fields and down to the town of Salcombe where we took a ferry around to the main part of town - which saves a long walk. Salcombe is an attractive seaside resort and well worth a visit. Other than a steep and quite long walk back up to the airfield it's a taxi (which we opted for). A nice trip to a nice airfield but be prepared to not see anyone there. ” |
