Pilot reviews of Calton Moor Airfield
“ | I visited Calton Moor 24/07/06 in a 172 for some short strip practice. It's pretty easy to see from a fair distance away, based just near the A52 fork for Stoke. Coming from the north I flew Trent VOR then turned 270 and it was visible at around 6 miles. Circuit height is 500ft, 06/LH 24/RH. 996ft elevation.
Runways are well mown but a touch bumpy, although smoother if you keep to the left (06) or right (24). Final 24 is certainly an experience; you've got the streetlights, then the farmhouse, and a hedge all on short final. That being said, a full flap glide still lets you nail it on the threshold.
06 is a more comfortable approach with only a single tree as a minor obstacle. 4ft wall approx 10m pre-threshold.
Nice little strip all in all though. Make sure you get it down smack on the threshold as you WILL bounce no matter how well you grease the landing! ” |
