“ | We operated aircraft out of Camb for a month. We found the airport to be very friendly and accommodating. The facilities are great and its probably one of the best all round GA airfields in the UK. ” |
“ | Flew in from Biggin Hill - ATC friendly and straight forward, a LH downwind join for 23 Asphalt. Flying club equally helpful & friendly, advised us to use the park and ride bus for the short journey into the city centre. Those of a certain age can use bus passes. Cambridge Flying cummunity membership gave a discounted landing fee. All in all an excellent destination with a city visit entirely practical. ” |
“ | We took a trip to Cambridge from Fairoaks on a Snowy Saturday morning, using my newly aquired Cambridge Flying cummunity membership card. ATC were friendly and it was good to do the Approach / Tower calls thing again.
Due to incoming traffic they held us in a down wind orbit for a few minutes which also added to the experience after which we parked up and booked in the Flying Club, who were very frendly, and reduced landing fees for Flying cummunity members ( so worth joining up).
My only issue is that although the Airport is close to the City, there is not a catering facility at the club, however the Flying club does have a free coffee machine nice touch. Good experience, but don't expect an all day breakfast or cafe facility on site.
Next time I will get a cab into the City. ” |
“ | Flew in to Cambridge in my C172 on a sunny Saturday morning. I found ATC very helpful and the runway is huge. Everyone in the aeroclub was friendly and helpful. Landing charge at £25 is expensive but the airport is very close to Cambridge centre. ” |
“ | ATC difficult. First kept waiting doing orbits south of control zone, then told to do standard overhead join. ATC was quite busy so I could not radio until I was between overhead and downwind. I was told I had not done a standard overhead join! When I landed, the ATC asked me to talk to them on the phone to tell me I had not done the appropriate join. In 500 hours flying this has not happened before. This ATC was not GA friendly!! ” |
“ | We phoned up for PPR and when we arrived it sounded as if they were looking forward to seeing us. ATC were great and told me to follow my colleague (KJ) round the circuit! Ground staff were great and organised a taxi, pointed us at the loos, water cooler, coffee and briefing facilities. Oh that more airports could be like this. ” |
“ | Flew into Cambridge today (09/10/11) with G-SEVE from Earls Colne. Very pleasant controller who was both Approach and Tower. We landed and received clear instructions to park, fortunately used the FREE landing thanks to UKGA. The restaurant was shut, which meant it was either a 15 minute bus journey to Cambridge City Centre (which isn't too bad) or a 2 minute walk to the Petrol Station and a packet of Oreo's. We took the second option, and we rate the Oreo's 10/10. On departure, it was a very simple fax to the tower and back out to the plane. Received a pleasant goodbye and returned home, I shall visit again! ” |
“ | if you arrive at Cambridge airport after 2:00pm don't expect to find any refreshment or food other than a cup of machine made coffee.... ” |
“ | Just back from a day visit to Cambridge from Bournemouth. What a delight. Fantastic facilities, clean and a hot day air conditioned. Free coffee and lots of smiles. Why can't all airfields be like this, welcoming. OK no landing fee in October was a bonus but I would have been happy to part with £25 for the great service. Was even asked, not told, how I would like to join and land! Easy to get into the city - if there are two people a taxi is the same price as a bus - and pleny of food choices. Not a bad word to say. Would definitely score 6 out of 5 ” |
“ | Went there on Saturday. Nice facilities all round. People are superb. My two passengers managed to visit the town centre within 45 mins between the flights, with enough time for taking some pictures and a cafe. Better watch our video, which shows the approach, overhead join, landing and t/o rw23 in good quality HD http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vM6TnQzKCPc You can also youtube it on "egsc cambridge landing" ” |
“ | Visited Cambridge for the weekend. The welcome at the field and GA centre were efficient, warm and friendly. Approach and tower were both very helpful. The park-and-ride bus to the city centre was useful - runs every ten minutes. The landing fee was steep, however, especially in view of my fuel upload. Even so, an overall positive experience, so I will be back. ” |
“ | Well maintained airport but the £25 landing fee for a student in a C-152 is not justified. ” |
“ | Called in to Cambridge to collect some passengers. ATC very efficient and helpful, especially to those unfamiliar with the airfield. Overflying the city is prohibited below 2000ft unless descending on the dead side for an overhead join. Remember to check the ATIS and quote the designator prior to your initial call.
Plenty of parking (free for the first 2 hours) and no airfield slots!
"Park and Ride" is only 2 minutes walk from the G/A centre which goes directly into the city centre.
Definitely worth a visit! ” |
“ | I felt so important here, I could have landed across the runway but conventional approach no problem wonderful ATC very friendly as I started to revert to Italian due to enormous size of place, controller calmed me, helped me so to you .. many thanks for great experiance!! Biggest airfield for me so far! ” |
“ | Been to Cambridge a couple of times now - easy to find, excellent ATC, enormous runway and the GA centre is welcoming and friendly.
The food in the non-airside restaurant is to be avoided at all costs, I pity the poor Marshalls workers who have to eat there, it is foul. ” |
“ | Went to Cambridge on April fools day, A day to visit a city with such clever people come from i am not sure?. Big, easy-to-find airport. Long, long runway. Full ATC with radar and atis etc. Landed and caught the Park & Ride bus to the town centre £1.60 single. Taxi back was £8.00 so not too bad as four of us. The main university town with all the colleges is really nice, lot of pubs and little narrow streets, quite busy and good atmosphere. The chance to punt allong the Cam too, as people offering trips. A good supply of resturants and pubs. Had a look around one of the colleges. I would definitely go back ” |
“ | A great GA-friendly airfield - a relaxed ATC and friendly staff in the GA Centre, with landing fees of £19 for a PA28. The only problem is that once you there's just a coffee machine and a wooden bench for company. I can say I've been there, but that's about it.
Dead handy for the city centre though. ” |
“ | The main (asphalt) runway 23/05 is a monster - very wide and very, very long - 46m x 1965m (or about 151ft wide by just shy of 6500 feet long) - beware of flaring too high! 23/05 grass is also available, as is 10/28, although I have never used that one.
There is a full ATC service who are friendly towards GA, and there are no scheduled flights (well, OK, there is one per week) although there are commercial aircraft in and out for maintenance and some charter flights that you sometimes have to dodge around. An RIS is sometimes available - depends on staffing and 23 has an ILS (that can be used for training to a break off at 2DME even when 05 is the active runway.)
I can't say much about it other than it is a nice place to land. I train out of here, and Mid Anglia School of Flying are very friendly, but since I don't ever see the visitors area because MASF's portacabins are away from the main buildings, I don't even know if they do a nice bacon butty!
Circuits are away from the city (i.e. to the east), so 23 left hand and 05 right hand. Turn inside the hospital which is ahead of you after taking off from 23. ” |
