“ | Flew in on the 26/6 in our PA28 for a golf break. I broke cloud at 2000 for runway 29 and what a sight all that Tarmac although it now has a fence almost halving it. The G/A apron is at the start of 29 so don't be tempted to land long thinking it's near the tower. We were the only A/C there and the place is massive. we parked on the apron and greeted by a fire man. Friendly bloke and helped take our clubs and bags to the small terminal building. We spent 20 mins chatting about the history of the place, US Navy SEALs with the silenced underground shooting range, hot tubs and jacuzzis! They stayed open 5 minutes late for us to depart for ISLAY, the weather changed at the last minute. Paid about £38 for landing and parking. Perhaps a little steep as nobody uses the place but the service was great. Stayed at the Royal Hotel in Campbeltown and their mini bus ferried us around for free. ” |
“ | My wife and I visited Campbeltown, (formerly RAF Macrihanish) on Monday 11 June en-route from Oban to Blackpool. This is my third visit and it must rank as one of the most underused airports in Britain. It is set three miles west of the town of Campbeltown and has a wonderful runway which was over 3,000 metres long, but has been shortened at the west end and is now 1,750 metres. (Still plenty for a DR400 though!) We used to have to park at the “Tadpole” next to the tower – about a mile and a half from the terminal. However, that land is no longer part of the airfield and we self-parked next to the terminal itself. Landing fee was £19.00 plus parking of just over £3.00 wasn’t bad. But the terminal closed not long after we arrived and we had no access to briefing facilities, although the security guard let us use the loos.
It is a lovely airfield to visit and we had a nice walk into town, (about 1hr each way). Taxis are available if you don’t like walking! Campbeltown was an MoD facility leased to HIAL Airports, but is now owned by a local business syndicate we are told, but still leased to HIAL. In the past, Campbeltown was one of the very few HIAL airports which did not allow an out of hour’s indemnity. All I can hope is that the new owners can change that. It’s a great airfield which is only open for office hours Monday to Friday, with the odd 30-40 minute opening on Saturday and no movements allowed out of hours.
Worth a visit for the scenery and a visit to the town and to help encourage the owners to let people use it!!

“ | Campbeltown (Machrihanish) 14th June 2011. Huge runway with the control tower where you pay your landing fee at the west end, and parking area at the east end near to the teminal. They sent their Land Rover down to pick us up. We pushed our Cessna back onto the grass to tie it down securely. There were no tie down blocks. THERE IS NO FUEL AT THIS AIRPORT, and the airport is closed at weekends. Friendly reception at the tower, and they provided met info on departure. ” |
“ | Flew into Campbeltown on 7 July en-route to Oban. The runway (there are actually two parallel - the southern one is a military taxiway/runway) are outrageously long for a SEP, but we managed to land long in the last 1000 metres coming in from the east in order to save the taxi time!
Fuel was available, but we didn't need any and weren't staying. Locals were friendly and like a previous poster, we were number one finals at about 10km. It is a great shame that the airfield isn't available (other than for about 45 minutes) at weekend as this is a truly grat destination. A pleasant walk into town in a spectacular location which is an easy flight from the south. Still well worth a visit though. ” |
“ | Amazing 3km runway, spectacular approach from the east over the loch and town. I was on final at 17 DME. The light aircraft apron is marked in Pooleys at the west end but if landing on 29 and heading into Campbeltown, there is another small terminal and apron at the 29 end of the field. It is closed at lunch time but ops came down in a landrover to let us out and there is a telephone to call if there is no one there when you return. Ops will unlock the gate and also collect the £16 landing fee. Taxi into town £7 (“Fona Taxi” 01586 554001). Gallery 10 was very good for lunch. ” |
“ | Flew into Campbeltown this week. It is well worth a visit. Incredible runway - beautiful scenery, and so quiet! AFIS were really helpful. No food available, some drink machines in the terminal building but the town is only a short taxi ride away (3 miles). ” |
