Clutton Hill Airfield

Clutton Hill is a grass airfield with one runway 07/25 of length 590 metres, lying at a height of 600 feet. It is about 7 miles east of Bristol International. It was begun in the early 1980s and in 1992 became home to the Wessex Aero Club.

In 1996 complaints were made about noise and inappropriate development in the Green Belt which were taken up by the District Council, but in 2000 an Inquiry found in favour of the airfield and awarded costs. This allowed the runway to be extended to its present length and up to 1500 movements (i.e. a landing or a take-off) a year. Evidence showed that aircraft noise was typically comparable to 3 cars or two tractors.

    In brief...

    24 Jan 09:

    Matthew Williams - Bishops Cannings
Clutton Hill currently closed to outside visitors flying in and is only allowing flights from aircraft based at the field. I spoke to the old owner Ian who has handed it over to new people to run and it is hoped "soon" that they will be able to allow visitors in. This as of 24-1-2009.

Flew into Clutton Hill for the first time in my PA28-180. Very friendly PPR from the mobile number on the web site. The field lies under the Bristol CTA (Base 1500 AMSL) so with an elevation of 550' it was somewhat difficult to find from such a low level. Landing on RWY25 there is a significant hump/ditch about a third of the way in, and I was advised to touch down beyond it (i.e. roughly in line with the buildings). The surface was in fair condition and the £5 landing fee was perfectly reasonable. It's a short walk to the local pub (walk along the left hand edge of RWY25 then branch off to the left, down the hill and turn left again onto the road). We didn't have time to eat but the menu looked enticing and the surroundings were very pleasant. Prior to take-off you are requested to contact Bristol Radar (125.650) to inform them of your impending departure. All in all a very nice destination.
