Pilot reviews of Coal Aston Airfield
“ | Just a heads up on Coal Aston.
Airfield is now fenced off from cows these days. The strip is in a lot better condition than in previous years. There are two pubs (the Inn at Troway does excellent food)local to the strip and also a garden centre with an excellent cafe. The farm is now run by Richard Valle, PPR is still preferred but you would still be welcomed regardless. Please use Safety Com "Coal Aston traffic" (135.475) and please keep all circuits LEFT HAND for both 11 & 29 The strip is ideally located for visiting Sheffield, Chesterfield and the Peak district. ” |
“ | A very friendly and causal airfield. PPR the evening before to arrange to pick up a friend for a flight and then to drop him off later today. The airfield is a little hard to find although Flymap made it a simple task. Windsock on Eastern end with two green hangars southside mid field. The field is used for grazing cattle and the owners had the Collie round up the herd on our return approach. Surface is a little rough as expected but quite usable. There is a distinct dip in the middle and a hump at the 11 end. Mind the cow pats! Too a while to clean that lot off.. ” |
“ | A useful alternative to Sheffield but you need a pickup. Friendly farmer providing farm strip for £6/night in a hangar if there's space, and £6 landing fee. ” |
