We visited Colonsay again in late August to take our greyhounds for a walk. The weather inbound had been poor, but had cleared by the time we arrived and turned into a lovely clear and bright day. The airfield at Colonsay is basic with a 500m tarmac runway, (in excellent condition) and with a rather challenging approach from the east over low but very jagged hills. Not a problem at all in the C172, but plan your approach carefully. The airfield is unmanned but has a dedicated frequency. PPR must be arranged with Oban and you need to have a current indemnity form from them which you can arrange by phone. On the day, (as we already had a current indemnity following a visit to Oban in June), we just phoned Oban and paid them by Visa for the landing fee which was £17.38 for a C172. There are NO facilities at the airfield, just a wooden waiting room for the daily scheduled flight which was closed when we arrived. Please note that when you speak to Oban, they will advise you when the flight is due and you will need to park well to the side of the small apron to allow the Islander room to maneuver. The island is lovely and we enjoyed the walk to the ferry terminal at Scalasaig and took afternoon tea at the Colonsay Hotel which we found to be beautifully decorated – more like a country club than a hotel, with lovely grounds and water for the dogs.
