Flew into Cosford to visit the RAF Museum on Tuesday 20th October. The PPR on-line was very easy and the friendliness of the RAF and civilian staff was exceptional. The landing fee of just over £30 included five hours parking. As you might expect, the standard of the runway, taxi-ways and grass parking were exemplary as was the Approach and Tower ATC. The Museum: I’ve visited before by car but it never ceases to amaze me how much there is to see on every visit. The Cold War museum is itself exceptionally impressive, but so are all the exhibitions. Free entry and a good café (two actually) just add icing to the cake. What better way to visit an air museum than by aeroplane? If you haven’t been then go. Weekdays’ only (RAF use at the weekends prevents civilian flights), but don’t be put off by the apparent paperwork: it was exceptionally friendly, easy and brief. |

Training JP-5
From
Ian McLaren
15 Oct 04
A training JP-5 from the fleet at RAF Cosford. These are used for training RAF groundcrew from all aviation technical trades to qualify as aircraft marshallers and others as "hangar pilots" who control an aircraft if it is getting towed into a hangar or parked on a pan. These aircraft are still fit-to-fly (at a push!) and so all taxi-ing is done by a qualified RAF pilot, qualified on-type, kitted out with helmet, oxygen and intercom feeds and active R/T. Any trainee passengers are also given full aircew medicals, ejector seat training and survival skills.
