Pilot reviews of RAF Cosford

30 Oct 15 - Stephen Nuttall - 0.5 NM North of HMS Nightjar

Flew into Cosford to visit the RAF Museum on Tuesday 20th October. The PPR on-line was very easy and the friendliness of the RAF and civilian staff was exceptional. The landing fee of just over £30 included five hours parking. As you might expect, the standard of the runway, taxi-ways and grass parking were exemplary as was the Approach and Tower ATC.

The Museum: I’ve visited before by car but it never ceases to amaze me how much there is to see on every visit. The Cold War museum is itself exceptionally impressive, but so are all the exhibitions. Free entry and a good café (two actually) just add icing to the cake. What better way to visit an air museum than by aeroplane? If you haven’t been then go. Weekdays’ only (RAF use at the weekends prevents civilian flights), but don’t be put off by the apparent paperwork: it was exceptionally friendly, easy and brief.

  • Quality and value of food / drink: 4
  • Standard of runway: 5
  • Landing fee / handling charges: 4
  • ATC / AFIS / A/G service: 5
  • Friendliness of welcome: 5

First visit to RAF Cosford, very helpful ATC and much easier than expected straight in landing. Long and wide runway so watch flare height. Great Museum and facilities and the RAF staff couldn't have been more helpful.

Just a pity that the landing fee is a bit heavy.

RAF Cosford Airshow After years of driving in/out and suffering nightmare long traffic queues I decided to see if I could fly in. Contacted Cosford Operations and requested to land prior to the commencement of the show. They advised they would send me some information and this duly arrived. Enclosed was a letter from "Operations" with lots of useful information, requirements that had to satisfied prior to departure from the home airfield and a very useful pilots aide memoir from the show sponsor. No landing fee charged providing advance show tickets are purchased and no crown indemnity insurance charge if your aircraft is insured to £7500,000. No departure possible until the last display has departed the ATZ. Exellent day and ATC. Recommended.

ATC were excellent and very friendly. Fax them a copy of your aircraft's insurance policy showing Crown Indemnity Cover ahead of your visit and telephone for PPR.

Currently open MON TUE & WED for visiting GA. A good tarmac runway and just a short walk to the fabulous RAF Museum.

Highly recommended.
