Visited Coventry airport first time. On positive side, very welcoming, friendly and helpful ATC, superb tarmac runway that seemed endless in length, reasonable landing fee of £13. The down-side is mostly COVID19 related as café and toilets were closed; people in one of the office blocks kindly allowed us to use their toilets. Oh, and I didn’t like being told-off for not wearing high-vis jacket; so, I told them back that I read pilot information on the website very carefully and didn’t see any mention of high-vis being mandatory. I felt that the pilot information on their website should have mentioned that although the airport is open, the facilities are not and about the need for high-vis. During my phone call to the ATC for a PPR as well, I was not told about these two essential pieces of information. It is out-rightly a GA airport although microlights are welcome. It was very busy with a lot of GA training activity – I was 3rd in line to land. No other visitors at the time of my visit, probably related to COVID19. I wouldn’t recommend going there till the pandemic restrictions are over, then I might have another look.

The combination of friendly ATC (eg. asking if we were new/familiar after landing and providing clear progressive taxi instructions), great facilities (ILS, long runway etc.) easy parking make this a very worthwhile destination. I recommend you prearrange to visit/park at the onsite museum. Airbase is unusual for aircraft museums because so many of the aircraft are still airworthy (e.g. the old Nimrod is on 24 hour standby for oil pollution dispersal operations) and you can get inside them (even sit in the pilot seat). Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteers to tell you about their history. Very reasonably priced £10 admission. There's been a fair bit of investment in the site over recent years which has good facilities all round. We were hosted by ClassicFlight, the new flying club based there, who have very swish new offices and very experienced staff. In addition to the usual PA28 and Robin for PPL training, they also have access to a wide range of unusual aircraft if you fancy your hand at something else. There was relatively little traffic around - someone doing circuits, a couple of passenger flights, a few other visitors. By staying below 1500 feet, we remained well clear of Birmingham airspace and the VRPs were easy to spot. Seems a very good combination of full ATC and facilities with reasonable prices and not that busy. One to put on the list of places to visit if you haven't been there.

@ Keith Parker
You obviously flew in when CVT was in a state of limbo before Sir Peter Rigby's buy out. As for the Air Atlantique Classic Flight Fleet, may I point out that they are not all "rotting" as you say. Out of the many aircraft on the grass apron, the only aircraft unairworthy are as follows: DC6 (being converted as a restaraunt) DH104 Dove (being rebuilt), Hunter T8 (static, Shackleton (taxiable), Nimrod (taxiable).
May I suggest that you re-visit & (when you do so) drop in to take a tour of "Airbase" where you will receive a warm welcome & discover some rare & well maintained 1950's aircraft.
