Visited Culdrose yesterday arriving from Le Touquet via Lee On Solent. Dad served here for years in the navy and I fulfilled a dream by flying in with him to an airfield where I'd come a lot as a child.
Easy to arrange a PPR via their Flight Planning team and Lee Grunwell there was great in setting everything up for us. "Thursday War" was on and so we arrived amidst lots of action with Merlin helicopters practicing refuelling in the hover and Hawks arriving and departing.
Excellent service from ATC and you get the full works of Approach, Tower and Ground. We were allocated 07 - not the duty runway - to give us an easier approach in the strong winds. Hate to think of the amount of fuel a Hawk -that had been told to line up and wait on 12 - was burning as we made our PA28 speed descent on right base and final ... assume ATC was worried about wake turbulence had they let him go ahead of us.
On landing, met by a marshaller. Fuel bowser and a crew van arrived immediately .... incredible service.
Landing and overnight fees very reasonable - about £30 in total - but they do levy an additional special usage charge of about £16 as well ... don't know why.
Anyway, all in all, a brilliant visit and will definitely return.

s this.
