23 Oct 10: Update after Vancouver Air Services purchase
Vancouver Air Services have now bought a 65% share of Durham Tees Valley Airport from Peel Airports and have become the major sharholder. This is a firm that has bought many ailing airports around the world. It is hoped that VAS will try and bring DTVA out of the doldrums it has inherited since the arrival of Peel Holdings in 2003, who were, first and foremost, a property developement company.
To date, with the exception of a staff reduction exercise, nothing has happed as yet. The airfield is very quiet (plenty of room for GA), with only 3 regular airline flights per day to and from Aberdeen and Amsterdam. There are also daily flights to Southampton. Occasionally there are the odd flights to Alecante, Gerona and other airports but they are very infrequent and patchy. Most days the airport is very quiet. The air traffic staff are very friendly and helpful and will welcome GA. There is also RADAR and ILS if you ever feel the need.
The flying Club, around since 1970 has closed but there are two flight training organisations on the airport where one can grab a cuppa. At the moment DTVA's fuel is one of the most expensive (if not the most expensive) in the country and even GA has to pay a handling fee on arrival. DTVA aircraft owners group operate out of Hangar 3 and will offer a warm welcome to visiting pilots if we are about.
The runway is 7,300 feet long, as DTVA is an ex RAF bomber/fighter airfield which opened in 1941. GA normally provide the majority of aircraft movements for the airport. The nearest airfield to DTVA is Fishburn,11 miles to the north. Darlington and Stockton are both 5 miles from the airport. There is a Taxi rank outside the Terminal building.
Latest review
“ | Landed here on a trip from Cambridge today. ATC were very friendly, had a radar vectored ILS. Mandatory handling, which is a bit annoying, but the folk at Weston Aviation were nice and helpful.
Fees for a 172 were £25 landing, £25 handling plus VAT. Parking is £10 per 24h period. ” |
