There’s not one bad thing I could say about Duxford. I visited in my aircraft, tagged onto my local flying school fly away. 6 Aircraft in total visited and were all handled perfectly, and managed to get into the already busy circuit with ease. The aerodrome is the highest standard of aerodrome I have visited to date, the grass is cut and the tarmac is smooth. Parking next to the ‘Memphis Belle’ was quite surreal and was not expected when I woke up that morning. The landing fee was around £12 and that included 2 hours free in the museum which is excellent value for money! Food and drink is pricey, but I’m from the north so maybe this is standard prices down south? There are a couple of cafes onsite, sitting outside watching the vintage aircraft perform power runs and watching the resident Tiger Moths and De Havilland Dragon Rapides perform breaks overhead was the way how I liked to spend my lunch. The museum compliments the airfield fantastically and you can easily lose yourself, as well as track of time whilst in the hangers, if you’re a plane geek like me. The museum really does take a long time to visit all the hangers so my advice to fellow pilots is to make a day of it and get in early, leave late. The flight school group and myself loved it so much, we made the 2 hour 30-minute round trip the following week too, just to enjoy it all again, and mainly visit those hangers we missed the previous week. Any pilots visiting Duxford will not be let down by the service, nor the price. Take the family and enjoy it.

Flew to Duxford on a nice calm day. Excellent A/G service. Choice of asphalt and grass runways. Grass runway to the North of asphalt runway. Good food. Tickets for 2 for Imperial War Museum up to 2 hours included in £13 landing fee is a real bargain. Very pleasant and enjoyable atmosphere with families coming to visit the museum. Definitely worth a visit.

Flew into Duxford on two separate occasions last month (October 2013). On both occasions, me and my father were flying down from Netherthorpe to experience the museum, not to mention it's a great sightseeing trip en-route with uncluttered airspace on the way down. The arrival/join procedures are well thought out and easy to follow, and ATC are always willing to make things work if you're joining from an awkward spot. ATC themselves are very professional. The runway is no doubt the smoothest I have ever landed upon; not a single bump on the runway nor the taxiways. Nice long runway too, so don't worry if you're operating heavy. Fuel was available on site and we were greeted by the fuel man on both occasions who drove up to our aircraft and sorted everything out. Second time round a museum guide also came to our aircraft; very helpful! The only downside is the cost of the food/drink; it's around £8-£9 for a hot meal and drink, very expensive!!! The quality of the food itself is fine. |

Visited Duxford (EGSU) from Netherthorpe (EGNF)on Tuesday 1st October 2013 in G-ROLY a C172 based at Netherthorpe.
Routing was fairly straightforward and was conducted VMC-on-top. We delayed our departure due to Duxford being fogged in. PPR was easy and it was very quiet on arrival, probably due to the 23kt crosswind!
A bargain landing fee got both of us free access into the hangers for 2 hours. This is probably the most interesting airfield I have ever flown into.
Runways were both immaculate (both grass and tarmac) and this is somewhere we will certainly be re-visiting.

A field of radar dishes somewhere in the area of Duxford/Little Gransden I think. The photo was taken on the way from Elstree to Tollerton (Nottingham).

Duxford is home to the Imperial War Museum and houses the finest collection of flying and static warbirds in Europe, if not the world.
The landing fee is slightly above average because it does include the entrance to this enormous museum. It has several airshows each year, of which, Flying Legends in July is the finest warbird airshow in the world.
