“ | First time to Earls Colne today, easy to find exceptionally friendly staff, the young lady on reception/parking duties could not have been more helpful or friendly.
Would definitely recommend as visit here. ” |
“ | Flew into Earls Colne on Saturday 16 October for fuel when returning to Blackpool from Clacton. I’d wanted to visit Earls Colne for years and was not disappointed. The set-up was very professional but also very friendly and informal. Once refuelled, we found that our navigation kit was unserviceable and they were happy to give us a free landing (as we returned after the failure – too close to Stansted to trouble-shoot in the air), and let us charge our equipment as we tried to resolve the problem. Unable to resolve it and resorting to good old map, heading, compass and stopwatch, they gave us some invaluable advice on avoiding Stansted’s airspace on departure. A lovely and friendly airfield in a delightful spot. There was a snack bar and seating area outside the clubhouse (closed when we were there late on a Saturday), but it looked like a great spot for just watching aircraft. Both the grass and hard runways were in great condition as was the grass parking. A really friendly airfield that had everything I like in a club airfield: friendly, helpful, a lovely location and gently informal. Wish it was closer to Blackpool. ” |
“ | Being this the first time I visited earls colne I didn't really know what to expect, I thought the A/G service was great and the condition of the runway was very good although the white runway edge markings were slightly hidden due to overgrown grass making it very difficult to see the edges of the runway when on approach, the landing fee for a single engine aircraft was on the high side and there was not much inside the clubhouse and being my second solo land away, I felt very awkward when I entered the clubhouse area, allthough the woman at the reception was very helpful many of the pilots in the clubhouse were very intimidating and unfriendly, but I am only 16 so this may have been the reason. I preferred Lydd which had a much warmer welcome to students, and similar landing fees. ” |
“ | Visited on Friday 14th June.
Standard overhead join. Unfortunately A/G didn't mention about the traffic on an extended downwind join (must have called up a long way out as we never heard them) and were quite startled to see them cross very closely across our nose from "nowhere". Arrived after 15:30 and the burger van (attached to the clubhouse) was closed. So made do with a complimentary coffee from the machine. The girls on OPs were charming but £15 for landing at this field in the middle of nowhere really does make me question about visiting again. Can't fault the place apart from that. ” |
“ | Made an unplanned visit into Earls Colne today.
Always a great welcome there however this time the visit was enhanced by the availability of food form the burger van located next to the club house
The owner tells me that this is going to be a permanent feature. i can recommend the cheeseburger, great quality and very good value. ” |
“ | I flew into Earls Colne from Southend on 28/12/11 in a Slingsby Firefly. I received a friendly welcome and good service from the A/G radio and lady on the desk. It is a pretty airfield located next to a golf course and country club I believe. Landing fee was just over £12. I met family and we visited a very attractive local village for a pub lunch. On returning I was refuelled and was able to borrow a funnel to fill up with oil. Great service and I would use the airfield again when I am next in the area. ” |
“ | I flew into Earls Colne on Sunday evening, as I had a meeting in Chelmsford on Monday morning. Easy to spot, and a very neat-and-tidy airfield, next to the golf course and industrial estate. Like so many East Anglian sites, it has a strong WWII heritage. The first radio call after touch down was "Welcome to Earls Colne" - and that set the tone for the whole visit. I had hoped to return to Sherburn Monday evening but that was out because of 20G37 kt winds at Sherburn, and the fuel delivery not having arrived at Earls Colne. So I decided to fly home on Tuesday. The team at Earls Colne helped me with good parking and tie-downs overnight, fantastic hospitality and a lift to the station. There is absolutely no doubt I will be back - perhaps as a launch-pad for France. What a gem of an airfield! ” |
“ | Flew into Earl's Colne last Saturday. Easy to spot, narrow hard runway, easy parking, fuel all very straight forward and credic cards accepted (not Amex).
PA28 £12.00 ” |
“ | Flew into Earls Colne on Monday 25th August. Very easy to spot as has a large golf course next door. Very friendly place - food very basic (choc machine) but had free coffee. One chap showed us a pathway that leads to the golf course club house - a 10 min walk -but there is a cafe there.
Long asphalt runway and parralel grass runway. Would certainly go there again. ” |
“ | Flew into this excellent airfield last weekend. We felt most welcome before and during our visit. Catering is little basic (free coffee!) and cold snacks but a 10mins walk to the nearby golf club has excellent a coffee shop and license bar with excellent hot and cold food.
I will certainly be back for another visit! ” |
“ | Visited Earls Colne for the first time today. I must say I was very impressed both with the quality of the place and the welcome we got. Getting there (more or less due north Southend) is a breeze and the circuit is pretty straightforward. The quality of the airfield is excellent. We got a very nice welcome. There is no catering on the A/D but the control centre has tea and coffee plus soft drinks and snacks so no need to wander too far. The sun was shining, the drinks cold, the locals friendly - what more can an aviator want (apart from 100ll at 50pp litre!).
The departure is straightforward - stay on RWY track til 100ft QNH.
Thanks Earls Colne - I'll see you again for sure. ” |
“ | Thought it was time to call in at Earls Colne rather than flying past as I normally do.
Parrallel (grass and tarmac) runways in good condition and with plenty of length. They don't operate the runways simultaneously so important to be clear about which is in use / required. I was flying a tailwheel Jodel so I went in on the grass and departed on the tarmac. There are some noise issues so PPR essential, as some of the requirements apply to the 24 approach as well as to both departure directions. Good radio and nice clubhouse with free coffee. No meals but basic snacks and avgas available. ” |
“ | Prices still 12.00 for a Dakota (235hp PA28) the people were friendly and the golf club produced a good meal, with reasonable prices, get clear directions to there though as its really very near ... good airfield but recommend they think about hiring out bikes as there were no taxis recommended? yes I'd rate it 9/10 not too busy either and free coffee! ” |
“ | Flew in to Earls Colne today on a day of near perfect viz. There are two adjacent parallel runways, one tarmac 10m wide and one grass 20m wide, a slightly odd arrangement. Very helpful young lady on the R/T. There isn't a cafe but if you turn left out of the clubhouse and then first left along what was probably an old runway which is now a road, a 10 minute walk will bring you to a golf club which is open to the public and they do a full range of sandwiches and meals which are good value. The departure and arrival procedures are very specific but easy to follow and the landing fee for a Commander 112 was £12 which is reasonable. Try it, I think you will enjoy the experience. ” |
