Visited Elvington from Netherthorpe (EGNF) on 19/08/2015. A short flight via the Sherburn overhead. This was in G-ROLY a C172 based at Netherthorpe. We had been trying to visit here for some time, but the airfield does not always accept visitors due to the runway being used for high speed car runs and various other things, so always worth calling to check before leaving.
It has a huge runway but only part of it is now used for GA landing, it is still however easy to spot from the air. We were met by a friendly chap who gave us two free entry tickets into the grounds and museum on return for the £20 landing fee. Fuel is available and there is a cafe on site too.
A really worthwhile day out and the airfield offers something over and above most others much like Duxford does.
We will be returning as we did not get chance to visit the whole museum.
