Pilot reviews of Finmere Airfield
|“||What an absolute nightmare!|
Myself and another glider pilot were forced to divert to Finmere under poor weather conditions and oh gosh wasn't that an absolute mistake!!!
The first issue with Finmere is the lack of radio, even for general traffic announcements. The site is primarily used for microlights, and usually they have a fairly good standard of look-out however I was caught out on finals by one deciding to line up on the numbers.
My second and BIGGEST issue was the land owner. UKGA state on this page, as per CAA Cap 667, any aircraft forced to divert or land in case of emergency is subject to no landing fee. Finmere has no landing fee however apparently this does not apply to gliders solely because we were forced to bring trailers onto the site... Ideally myself and the other pilot would have aerotowed out but the guy was insistent that NO light aircraft came onto the site... Moments before a Jodel taxi'ed to a stop right next to us...
I think in the short term, Finmere is best avoided. The CFI of the microlight school was also very unhelpful, so I would avoid that also.
Do the world a favor, and take up gliding instead ;)
