“ | Visited Gamston in a C150 Aerobat. On arrival a decent A/G service was provided, although a lack of communication by other circuit traffic was observed - this seems to be typical of smaller airfields nowadays. After parking we wandered to the ATC tower and were greeted by the on-duty A/G controller who arranged fuelling within a matter of minutes. Whilst getting fuelled, we headed to 'The Apron' which is the on-site cafe.. although not so much a cafe as a proper restaurant. Three course meals are available during the day (9am-10:50am, 12pm-4pm) and you even get bread/butter free of charge (like in a fancy restaurant!). Very impressive selection of freshly baked cakes too. The team were nice and friendly and the whole atmosphere was very welcoming.
We headed back to the ATC to pay for landing & fuel and then headed out. On departure you transfer almost straight over to Doncaster to request clearance as just above the airfield is the local CTA/ATZ.
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will be going back again soon! ” |
“ | Flew into Gamston as part of the first leg of a Westair Fly-Out to Beverley.
The cafe has to be one of the best at an airfield and the outside seating overlooks the apron and runway - what more could we ask for?
Landing fee was not too bad at £15 and the A/G radio was very good. Runway is excellent and the service from Doncaster inbound and outbound was excellent - they seem very flexible with GA traffic on the many occasions I have used them.
The cafe is worth a visit in its own right - think more bistro than greasy spoon and you have the idea. ” |

Doncaster ATC helpful as always and Tower at Gamston great service. Very good airfield and facilities
Main reason for notes is to say that the café is superb, but more formal and serious food than the bacon sandwich.
(breakfast apparently available until 11.00)
The food and service are first class and it was very busy on Sunday so booking might be useful. Staff really friendly too.
Very nice place to visit.

“ | 6th April 2012 Flew the ALH Skytrain Diamond DA40 TDI with some Canadian relatives for a scenic tour over West Derbyshire. Great advice from ALH regarding take off runway. Post flight visited the Apron Restaurant on the airfield. It was great, the food was excellent, the atmosphere was buzzing, definitely the place for an en route meal or snack. We can't recommend it enough. Well done Apron staff! ” |

Be aware if you are planning a visit to Gamston on a Monday or Tuesday the restaurant is closed, so the only refreshment facility available is a vending machine, which doesn't serve hot drinks.
The previous pilot lounge and crew kitchen are also no longer available. The kitchen is now a crew room and the lounge is now an office.

“ | Popped up to Gamston from Conington yesterday. Nice place, easy to find, good welcome, good facilities etc. Unfortunately did not have time to visit the cafe. Will have to visit again when I have more time. ” |
“ | I visited Gamston from White Waltham just after the heavy snow had hit the Midlands. Not only was the runway crystal clear , the Atc were very helpful and answered all my questions re parking and joining instructions. I met my parents at the cafe for lunch and it was excellent, good food and service. The ground guy was equally chatty and helpful too. I would be happy to fly in and out every day, even with the Doncaster CTA above it was very straightforward. ” |
“ | Visited Gamston on Saturday 24 July as part of the Westair fly-out to Sywell.
I’ve been several times before and the AFIS - A/G, runway and parking were as good as ever. However, the new café was a revelation. Some years previously, they had had a reasonably decent café in one of the hangars, but which had no views. The new café “the Apron” is a revelation. The food was excellent, (and well above the simple bacon butty average), with lots of choice and friendly service. The indoor seating was up to high-street standards of décor and the outside seating overlooks the apron and airfield.
Super destination and back onto my list of places to go back to soon.

“ | Visited Gamston for the first time on Wednesday 28th October.
Very clean and well kept airfield, great runway and new cafe was excelent and food very very good as per previous poster.
Definitely a place I will visit again ” |
“ | Although I have always been really impressed with the facilities at Gamston, I find the place a little 'soulless'. With the opening of a new cafe / restaurant, this has gone a long way to change my perception.
I popped in today to check it out and I was really impressed. The building is clean, bright and modern and there is a nice outside seating area, for that odd day of decent weather. There is a full time chef, and the food, from what I experienced, seems to be a cut above what is normally on offer at UK GA airfields. ” |
“ | very nice friendly airport, good facilities available when cafe finally opens, tea and coffee from vending machine till then.very polite staff although there doesant seem that many of them, same person does everything on apron everytime i have been. ” |

I recently visited Gamston and it's a great airport. There were lots of jets and King Airs as well as GA light aeroplanes. The facilities are fantastic and just so everyone is aware they are building a new cafe which they reckon will be open in January 2009. Its a very big cafe they are in the process of building.I would recommend people to visit once the cafe is built. The staff are so freindly and helpful. ” |
“ | Flew to Gamston a lot when going for my license. Nice field, good visibility, sailplanes used to mark the area on cumulus days. Service was spot on and pilot lounge clean and pleasant. ” |
“ | I fly from Gamston. Note that the Diamond cafe closed at the end of March 08 (probably too out of the way to attract enough customers). Hopefully someone else will set up shop as the bacon butties etc will be missed. Meanwhile there is the usual tea/coffee/snacks from the vending machine in the visitors lounge area.
I may be biased, but I find Gamston is a very efficient businesslike GA airport. There is no club, or clubby atmosphere, but I want to fly, not socialise. ” |
“ | Very pleasant visit here. Chap in tower very friendly, as were few locals whom we spoke to. Overnight parking/Land Fee (waivered due to fuel uplift) and half a tank on a C150 came to around £60, not bad. Would call in again. PC in briefing lounge for flight planning use. ” |
“ | A frequent stop off place for a quick coffee and rest stop but not a destination for a fly out to my mind. All the flying facilities are first class and the staff are helpful and curteous but generally most visitors are left to sort themselves out. I am sure there is a cafe but I have never been when its open. Tea and coffee making facilities are available and are spotlessly clean as are the loos. ” |
“ | One of the less friendly airfields for GA. Twr staff extremely miserable ” |
“ | Nice airfield, the runway's nice and long, when I was there the cafe wasn't the best, A/G was good enough, nothing overly special. ” |
“ | Two recent visits to Gamston made on the 23/11/03 and 07/12/03.
Recently resurfaced decent length runway - 1200+m - and nice and easy to find thanks to the VOR located on the field. Watch out for gliders using the runway on the west side of the field. The main change here is the opening of a new cafe located on the first floor of the Diamond hangar (main UK distributors for the Katana). Very friendly ATC, marked parking "stands". Go to the tower marked "C" to pay your landing fee - just £10 for a PA.28.161 To find the cafe, which is not obvious, leave the tower via the back door and head out in to the car park at the rear, turn left along the back of the hangars and go in the door and up the stairs of the third hangar down - marked Diamond Supplies and Cafe. On the first floor is a pilot's supplies shop, a Katana simulator and an excellent cafe. Good range of food, friendly staff, plenty of seats and tables and good opening hours too. They told us today that the burgers, pie and mash, sandwiches, toasties, all day breakfast, bacon and sausage butties, chip butties etc will be extended to add chips and potatoes in the new year. Superb place for a nice lunchtime break. ATC seemed happy for us to view the contents of the hangars without going inside which included 2 x King Air 200's, a Citation C550 and a Citation Jet, a Swedish PA.24 and a couple of American. Two new hangars to the right of the tower housed a couple of Cub's, a Sky Arrow and a few other goodies. ” |
