Garston Farm Airfield
Not sure how you would class this. - Partly information but more a query.
How old is the Garston Farm Airstrip ? - The reason I ask is that my family lived in Brislington from 1948-58. My father, Capt.G.G.Liles DFC was an ex RAF/BOAC/BA Pilot who retired in 1975 & died in 2006. Immediately after WW2, 6 weeks after I was born, he joined BOAC and we took an overseas posting in Montreal, but all the BOAC families there were brought back in early 1948 to train on Boeing Stratocruisers at Filton, Bristol. My father joined the flying club at Whitchurch while we lived there, and would often 'go off for a flight somewhere'.
I wasn't aware of any connection between him and your Airstrip until today, when I spotted the airstrip on a map, just outside of Marshfield.
I recalled as a child that we would often drive up on the A4 to London, either to visit relatives or to'take a scenic 50s drive' - or of course for my father to go out on one of his BOAC trips. This was of course pre-motorway days, and it was usually an A4 journey, but I recall in my distant youth that we would often divert through Marshfield for some reason, and then rejoin the A4 later on. - Could it have been that he had used your Airstrip on occasions in the 1950s, from Whitchurch ?
(You'll probably tell me that it didn't exist in the 1950s !!)
Thanks,
J.Liles

“ | Garston Farm is a really excellent little airfield. Flew in today with 3 colleagues in a selection of light aircraft. Its very easy to find situated between the village of Marshfield to the North West and Colerne Airfield close to the South East. both of these are "no go" areas and its essential to get the briefing off of the website (as well as the required PPR call) I would say.
However its all straightforward and Colerne provided a really good ATC service when we visited - its blind calls on their frequency if they are not active.
The runway is in excellent condition, the reception from owners and residents was very friendly and we even had a cup of tea made for us. Landing fee is a donation and its one that we were very pleased to make. Certainly will return. ” |
