23 Dec 14 - Andrew Torkington - Manchester

I flew from City Airport Manchester to Gloucester in July 2014 with two friends and one of their sons.

Scenic flight South and very professional FISO from the point of PPR to handing over on departure.

A busy curcuit as we approached, however we received good advice and were marshalled to parking. Reasonable landing fee and simply superb meal at the restaurant just outside the airfield perimeter, as the airfield buzzed with life from SEP, business jet and helicopter activity.

Lining up we were 7th to depart, but all handles calmly and in a pleasant and relaxed manner.

A definite must visit airfield if you haven't previously been. I will go back in 2015 for certain.

The video of the flight is on YouTube if you are interested?

Visited Gloucestershire airfield on 30/07/2014 in G-ROLY a C172 based at Netherthorpe. Routing was via TNT VOR and WBA NDB.

I had pre booked an ILS and our route was IFR above cloud on the way down. Unfortunately despite arriving at our slot time we were told nether a vectored or procedural ILS was available due to staff shortages! Fortunately the cloud base was 2800ft so we were able to descend through it to MSA anyway but this was a real shame for me.

Upon landing on 27 we parked next to the fuel pumps for AVGAS. One of the AVGAS pumps was out of order and the remaining one had very little left we were told. For such a big airport I found this surprising that the fuel should be in this state.

We paid the very reasonable landing fee and fuel fees and then went for a nice coffee in the café. All very nice and although we did not buy food, the men u looked great. We were heading for Caernarfon so only needed a drink.

I will certainly be returning to the airport in the future, it has all the facilities you could require at reasonable prices, I think we were just unlucky with the issues above.

Another great trip to Gloucester from the Isle of Man. I've always had excellent service from this airport from everyone involved, and it's nice to get the discount for arriving in an antique aircraft but even without the discount I think Gloucester represents very good value for money. There's always interesting aircraft to see at this airport, and I think Gloucester consistently sets the standard for what a GA airport of this size should be like. One tip though: the taxi fares to the railway station can be quite high (almost £20 for the three mile trip from Cheltenham station on a Sunday, and £12 on a Friday - I paid more to the taxi drivers than I did in landing and parking fees for a weekend last year). This time I hired a car, I managed to hit some sort of discount with Europcar and it worked out easier, faster and no more expensive than taxi+train fare to Worcester.

Another return trip to Gloucester and however long it is between visits, the service and quality airfield are always the same Friendly and professional ATC and staff in the terminal always efficient but very friendly and helpful. Today was very busy as always but everyone slotted in without a fuss. Great trip for anyone looking for a land away.

I just want to add mine to all the good reviews there are already. I would go so far to say that this is he best airfield/airport I have visited in the last 10 years of my flying. Why didn't I come here before! Very professional and so friendly people on the radio. It made me feel so welcome at the very first call. My being novice about visiting big airport didn't matter and they helped me all along on the radio. Excellent runways matched by all around good facilities on the ground. Posh terminal building, spacious sitting around the reception. Good food in the Aviator restaurant, served promptly, large sitting area outside in the sun. And I was so pleasantly surprised when the lady at the reception told my landing fee was £9! I am going to be regular visitor here.

My first visit to Gloucester helped by a fine day, sunny and light winds. It was strange to be controlled and told to do this and that (but politely). Even though I wah trained at a busy airport that was a long time ago. Everyone was really friendly and I felt guilty handing over my free voucher. Transair shop with Transair prices so I bought a new log book to ease my guilt. Aviator cafe was worth a visit, too. You can undertsand why Gloucester gets so many visitors when they make you feel wanted!

Very impressed with the friendliness and efficiency at Gloucester today. And, with a fuel uplift, not expensive. We took the advice of the flightdesk, and caught the bus into Cheltenham for lunch at tthe Jazz Festival, before returning to the aerodrome(4 hours free parking) for our flight back to Sherburn. Top marks all round, and we are planning regular return visits, and to use it as a reggular refuelling point on our trips to/from the south west.

What a great airport! Went in today as part of a "fly out" with colleagues. Five of us arrived within 5 minutes and ATC were excellent. Very easy to spot - compared to the grass strips that I normally fly into its massive but easy enough to find the right runway once you have studied the website and airfield guide and Tower will guide you around the taxi ways. UL91 available and the fire crew were ready to fill us up on arrival having been pre-briefed. Landing fee for my Jabiru was under £10 so no inflated airport landing fees being charged despite the great facilities and service Don't be put off by the apparent complexity - Gloucester is super friendly, cheap and a great experience.

Flew in from Manchester; not my first visit to Gloucestershire but it's always a favourite due to it's full ATC and a convenient flight time from EGCC! I needed to do some circuits for currency, and despite a busy circuit was accommodated with no bother. ATC professional and friendly. Fees are acceptable for a fully controlled airfield, and improved by the landing fee discount if fuel is uplifted and half-price circuits. They also offer a loyalty card which offers a free landing after a certain amount of paid landings. The Aviator cafe was rammed on a sunny Sunday, but the staff managed to squeeze me in to enjoy a fantastic ham, egg and chips! Departure was as seamless as my arrival, and I look forwards to returning in the future!

Visited to see a friend and visit the pilot shop located just outside the terminal. Need your hi-vis vests here. Good runway and taxi ways and very efficient on ATC especially if you bother to listen to the ATIS first! Nice girls to take your money in reception, not cheap, but it is a decent airfield with good facilities. Pub located just outside the terminal for food and drink.

Went back to Gloucester (EGBJ) on the 15th March 2010 Great airfield. ATC excellent, all surfaces great and cafe very very good. The general upkeep of all the grassed and planted areas makes the place really pleasant to visit and deserves support. Very busy on Monday, probably due to races at Cheltenham. Altogether, well worth a visit. They still offer a discount with fuel uplift.

Flew into Gloucestershire on Sunday 11th Jan from North Weald, I was doubtfull that we would make it as 55 knot winds were forecast at 2000 feet. It was a slow journey down only 65 knot ground speed due to the high winds, cloudbase was close to safe height over the high ground west of Oxford, but we made it. Journey back was much quicker, 135 knots for a while. Great place to visit, as reported before, ATC, Runway, food and welcome all first class. Well worth a visit.

Went into Gloucester on Monday 8th Sept 08 Landing fee £20.60 inc VAT Very busy but very proffesional and good food in cafe. Nice place to visit. Join was overhead but good radio and no problems. Very well kept taxi and runway areas. Looks like Hi Viz is the norm as a previous report indicated.

Very helpful ATC and staff all round. Remember the ATIS before contact (i didn't but they were very polite in pointing this out!). Expensive but at least you get good service and decent, modern facilities. Lovely runways, but a bus circuit, and remember the noise abatement procedures. Recommended - pay it a visit.

Pricey for a GA field but for what you get, full ATC etc, it's semi-understandable. Nice presentable cafe, that you wouldn't be embarassed to take a non-flying friend to. Friendly, professional staff and nice little briefing area set aside with PC and Intenet acess for self-briefing in the departure/reception area.

Based there so biased. ATC are fab, if sometimes cautious when a jet is inbound. Busy airport with training, instrument approaches and heli as well as the private jets. Runways pointing everywhere. Cafe/bar is very much improved recently - and will be much better come July ! I hear the briefing facilities are very good - but never use them as I use Cotswold Aero Club - who will welcome anyone by the way for a cup of tea and a chat if you want to do your briefing there

Staverton as I will always think of it is THE top ga facilty in the uk great service, value for money. they are always worth a visit. If you cant afford the reasonable landing fees relative to the service and facilities provided you are probably a cheapskate!

I have always had a pleasant experience when visiting Gloucester. ATC are very helpful and at times are very busy. They also have light jet traffic which always lands on 27/09, so you may have to orbit in order to maintain spacing and vortex.

The cafe is okay for a quick snack and has recently been updated with new furniture. Roll on 1st July and the no smoking ban.

I've been to Gloucester on training flights and at first was rather daunted by the prospect of it being the busiest place I'd been. As it happened, I needn't have worried. ATC were brilliant, even when I got a bit confused taxying around!

So much so I was quite looking forward to going back on my QXC, and again everyone was really helpful.

Would make a nice confidence-building visit for anyone not used to full ATC.

Just completed my PPL training at Gloucester with Duncan Keen who was an excellent instructor. I found ATC in general pleasant but in need of the occassional push so as not to add unnecessary time to your flight. The cafe is good for basic quick cold sandwiches.

I visited Glos yesterday. I know it well as I trained and was based there. I felt I would receive a warm welcome...but alas, caught in a shower, I was instructed to join overhead (even though only one aircraft in the circuit). I was told not to park at the stand next to the terminal building and had to walk across the apron in the rain to pay my landing fee. (Couldnt quite work out why as there were no visiting jets) And to add insult, I was held up because they were not sure if my fuel account was still valid and whilst they found out and I had refuelled, time was 7:31 and they told me my account may be charged for keeping the airfield open as my indemnity had lapsed. Now I know that if you turn up in a jet, the story is different.....! Will I go there again? I think not. There are much more user friendly airfields within striking distance of Glos. Such a pity, it could be a brilliant GA airfield. Gloucester RIP.

went to gloucestershire on sunday to visit the transair shop easy to find for the first time and to join over head. nice long runways and good facilities but rather expensive to land £18.00 for PA 38. The transair shop does not offer any discount for flying in to shop there, (not that they should but it would have been nice if they did).

Good self briefing unit in the reception and friendly staff. 50-50 as to whether i would return there. (only due to the price). Would definatly return if there was an incentive from transair to call in.
