14 Aug 15 - Liam Sandie - Barnsley

Visited Guernsey (EGJB)from Netherthorpe (EGNF) on 11th August 2015 for an overnight stay returning on the 12th. This was in G-ROLY, a 172.

As usual the flight plan was filed via AFPEx and GAR forms sent via SkyDemon (free of charge). It was an early departure from Netherthorpe (0730local) for the flight down.

The weather was not great but easily arranged an ILS with Guernsey ATC and received vectors for the ILS onto runway 09, making the most of my IR(R).

We had arranged handling via ASG and they were there to meet us and gave helpful advice. They arranged fuel for us and we enjoyed the stay despite the weather. On the return to the airport the next day I was able to use their PC to file the return flightplan again via AFPEx and we departed a short time later with strong winds.

I have now visited all 3 Channel Islands and Guernsey worked out the most expensive at £53.20 for landing, parking overnight and handling. Still it was nice to have access to the ILS and the handling agent was good.

Will definitively be back in the future!

I diverted into Guernsey on my way back from Limoges due to unforecast 2km visibility at Alderney where I had planned to refuel. Jersey Zone and Guernsey Radar were extremely helpful and polite, and especially so once I'd told them I was unfamiliar with the airspace. The tower gave me directions to ASG Handling who dispatched a marshaller. ASG arranged fuel and helped me file a manual flight plan back to Thruxton, as well as telling me where to go to get my duty frees. I was very pleasantly surprised by the £15 landing/handling fee (Gloucester and Shoreham take note!). I will definitely return next year under less stressful circumstances.

Flew to Guernsey for the first time last Bank Holiday Monday.

Route from Shoreham via St Catherines & ORTAC.

Jersey radar very helpful & efficient, and we were then talking to Guernsey abeam Alderney. The landing fee is £10 if you upload fuel, and this is about the price of a litre of unleaded at home! Not bad for what is a small international airport.

FBU very friendly & helpful- all in all, a great place to go!

Headed off to Guernsey last weekend. Fabulous airfield and island with loads to see and do. Very helpful flight breifing unit who go out of their way to help especially good for first time channel crossers like myself. Controllers professional, friendly and efficient. Airfield has activity in bursts but for our arrival and departure no delays whatsoever. Good long tarmac runway and lots of parking on the grass area next to the tower. Landing fees ridiculously cheap for what you get (£16.50 for landing and 48 hours parking). FBU has excellent facilities: flight planning computers and an air-conditioned lounge for your passengers. I defy you to find more welcoming international airport for GA and they should be very proud of their facilities.

Flew into Guernsey on Wednesday and Thursday 24 and 25 June on day trips from Alderney.

The flight between the two airfields is very easy - a brief "mini flight-plan" is completed and faxed to ATC (fax machines at Alderney and Guernsey in briefing rooms). We didn't refuel (only 20 minutes each way from Alderney!) but I believe that Avgas was only about 98p/litre on our visit. Landing fee of just over £17.00 would have been reduced by overnight parking or refuelling, but I think for the facilities (excellent parking included tie-downs and chocks adjacent to GA terminal and adjacent to the briefing facilities) made this a snip.

On the first day, we just took our greyhounds for a walk along the nearby coastal walk, but on the second day, we hired a car (dogs allowed) for £28/day including fuel! This was a brand new (only 19 miles on the clock!) Ford Focus diesel from Perry's (Europcar). After a tip from the GA terminal staff, I asked for, and got, an aircrew discount (well worth asking for - gave us about 15% off standard charges).

The main terminal (where the car was collected) was next to the GA terminal, but was about a 5 minute walk around the car park as security fencing meant we had to walk along the public road to get there. Terminal facilities were as expected at a busy commercial airfield - more than adequate and expensive with it.

ATC was, as you would expect, excellent, but you must expect to give way to commercial traffic (of which there is a lot), but made very easy by a very slick and helpful bunch of controllers. As with most commercial airfields, you will get a clearance before cleared for take-off, so be prepared, and use the ATIS to get the basic info before calling for engine start. A very easy airfield with first class facilities at a price which would put some GA airfields to shame.

We liked it so much that we will go back and spend a few days there as soon as we can. Highly recommended.

If you are considering a visit to Guernsey, don't be put off by the Jersey Zone Class A. Having just made a trip down there on 28-29th June, ATC in both Jersey and Guernsey were efficient and courteous granting SVFR without any problems. The FBU is well organized and they will assist with your flight plan. For a reasonable sized airport Guernsey is very friendly and with landing charges at £10 for a single, free overnight parking and AVGAS at under £1/litre it must be one of the best value places to visit. From the airport it is easy to get into St Peter Port and there are plenty of things to see and do on the island which make a visit most enjoyable.

Visited Guernsey just to drop off my mate before staying in Alderney for the night, and again returning the next day to collect him! The ATC guys have a simple mini flight plan to complete for inter island flights. Expect a faily low level (1000FT) transit between islands, which is a little uncomfortable but no problem. (Wearing lifejackets of course).

Fuel service on the airfield was fantastic, very polite, pleasant guy from CI Fuel Services. Food and service in Guernsey airport cafe was poor however. Prob best to catch a lift into town.

Other than that, I will be returning shortly. Dont forget the advantages of fuel drawback!!

I have visited Guernsey the 12 of June 2005 coming from France with a DR400 and 3 collegues , all of them pilots. Once you are in contact with Jersey approach, you can feel that private pilots are very considerd in UK. The controllers altough fast speaking were perfectly comprehensible. They directed us upto the long final which we had to do at cruising speed (un-usual on small filed in France). Once on the ground, the Gas tanker was nearly waiting for us, that's convienent. After filling up the beast, we went to the tower for the passenger manifest and tax payment : 10 pounds. The lady in charge hemped us to get a taxi to go to city center. A friendly Taxi has then taken us to town. We then choosed a small restaurant where we ordered first a beer but we had to wait 15 min until noon (very disturbing for french guys !!) We had then meal and afterwards we walked on the water front and the city roads. Then we went to the more wooden part where we escalated to one ancient battery that is in renovation where you can overlook the Sark Island. After a refreshment in the way back, we took the bus 7 to the field. around 15 min and here we are back to our plane, very happy from the short visit in Guernsey. The most pleasureable thing is the friendlyness of the people and the real enjoyment of being on an island where everbody knows every one (or close). We then leave the ground but we have the chance to do go trough the north shore and then following the beaches to NE point where we then route to France at 1000 feet. We will definitively come back to Guernsey .

If you visit Guernsey a taxi to town is £8.00 each way. but a bus from the terminal 7 and 7a go from anticlockwise and clock wise around the island for 50p. takes 1 hour 35 minutes to travel completly around. worth it for a tour of the island and a look at the beaches of the north west side.
