“ | Visited Hinton in the Hedges 20 & 21 July to fly with Go Fly Oxford and one of their instructors. Excellent instructors and modern facilities attached to the side of the Hinton Skydiving hangar. When preparing to fly or approaching to land there is a great need to check the parachuting situation by contacting the airfield A/G frequency. Tell everyone where you are and what you are doing and get on with it. A very relaxed airfield with gliders, parachuting and powered aircraft all living happily together. The hard runway can be difficult to spot and the others are unusable but there is the option to takeoff/land on the grass 27/09 runway which was surprisingly smooth. Fuel is available and the paperwork is in a small building to the side. The tea-van” was no longer in evidence, replaced by a proper cafe next to a large outside seating area but it looked to have a good selection of burgers, bacon butties, drinks etc. The whole place was just so very relaxed. Although this airfield is some driving distance from me and I pass several others on the way I will definitely be returning to complete my training. ” |
“ | My wife and I called into this very busy airfield today.Parachuting and gliding with some ga traffic about.Very friendly welcome,no overhead joins for obvious reasons. No landing fee required we were informed,Avgas available.at £1.65 a litre, leave a cheque in the book by the side of the pumps. There is a fast food van on site doing a roaring trade with the parachutists.Well worth a visit if you crave activity. ” |
“ | Visited Hinton on 1 May as a round trip: Wycombe – Hinton in the hedges – Wycombe, whilst awaiting the return of passengers left for the afternoon at Wycombe.
It was at the end of the shortest flight (3.6nm/4 minutes) that I have ever done – having come from Turweston, just on the other side of Brackley.
The phone PPR emphasised the need to check the parachuting situation before even getting near the airfield – a bit of a challenge with less than 4nm to run! An early call told me that all the canopies were on the ground and the rest was typical unlicensed airfield A/G. Tell everyone where you are and what you are doing and get on with it.
I found the runway difficult to spot at first (no overhead joins), and aimed at a disused one, but spotted the real one in time to do a “kink” onto it.
A very relaxed airfield with gliders, microlights, parachuting and powered aircraft all living happily together. Landing fee was a donations box next to the fuel pumps and the whole place was just very relaxed.
There was a “tea-van” next to a very nice outside seating area and they had early-grey tea (always a sign of a thoughtful café!) I didn’t eat (having just partaken of a mains at Wycombe and a dessert at Turweston), but they looked to have a good selection of burgers, bacon butties, etc, so beloved of many of us.
A very charming airfield which I must revisit.

“ | Stopped at Hinton yesterday as Turweston close at 3 on Sundays.
What a friendly, helpful group of people! The place was buzzing with gliders and parachutists all making the most of the limited good weather we've had recently. There was a really friendly atmosphere and having discovered there's no landing fee happily made a donation in the charity box provided. Will definitely be back! :-) ” |
“ | Hinton is busy with skydiving 7 days / week, also gliding (by aerotow launch only) at weekends and bank hols. Plus various other GA / PFA a/c resident, may come and go at any time. Hinton 'DZ' man the radio (119.45) when they are active but are not strictly an a/g service; usual form is to broadcast your intentions to all on Hinton Traffic. Do NOT join overhead!! Beware gliders and tugs will generally use one of the three grass runways, generally with circuit to the South, but powered a/c should generally use the hard 24/06 with circuit to the North of the field, unless out of crosswind limits.
100LL fuel is mainly for resident a/c as pump is unmanned and locked, though if you have a chequebook you may get a local to unlock the pump and take your cheque for you.
Hinton Skydiving have a burger van open generally for snacks.
For briefing call the owner's office (farmer) on 01295 811235, or Aquila Gliding Club at weekends on 07981 103159 (at the launchpoint) ” |
