Visited Ronaldsway (EGNS) on Sunday 2nd June 2013 in G-ROLY a C172 based at Netherthorpe (EGNF). 1.9hours on the hobbs from start up to shut down and routing was via POL VOR and coasting out at Cleveleys, just north of Blackpool. We crossed the water at FL80 and had great service from both Blackpool and Ronaldsway ATC. I had been trying to make it to the Isle of Man since getting my PPL back in 2009 however the weather and wind on the island is very unpredictable and it has just never happened. Not as much of an issue now I have an IMC. Fortunately the weather was great and it was the Manx TT period so some of the island had a no fly zone. Because of this I decided to try and book in with Manx flyers but they had closed their business on the island very recently. Rendezvous Handling Services had taken over and the charges were as follows:- Landing fee:- £22.68 Parking fee (only a few hours):- £4.50 Handling:- £30 Total:- £57.18 The handling consisted of a mini bus from the aircraft some 300 metres to a small cabin with a PC terminal and a credit card machine. Although useful for filing the return flightplan via AFPEx I thought the overall charges were high. The staff at Rendezvous Handling Services were very polite and helpful though. If I had not read that it may be difficult to get a taxi or get out of the gate at the southern edge of the airfield I might have not bothered with the "handling" and just told ATC I don't require any. You could probably walk around to the north side anyway. We had to come in high due to wake turbulence from a landing aircraft but the airfield was easy to spot. We got a taxi to the Grandstand at the TT but even though we were lucky in that the main race had been delayed to the Sunday we were unlucky in that the actual race was delayed meaning we didn't see the best bits. GAR forms were completed on the new app from GoAV8 which worked well. Overall a lovely island and I will certainly be back many times. The water crossing is not that bad at all and I do not know why it puts so many pilots off. Plenty of wind farms and boats to hold on to ;)
