“ | Fantastic airport to fly into. Flew from Bristol via BHD. Both Exeter and Jersey controllers were fantastic. Jersey allowed us to cross the water at FL70 inbound and straight up to FL75 on the return. Kept us nice and high (5,000ft) on the approach until in glide range of jersey and dropped us down to 2,500 just prior to glideslope intercept.
Jersey aero club were really helpful, filed the gendec and GAR prior to departure which made it easy. Can however file the gendec on arrival. Landing fee for a Cessna 182q was only £13 and parking all day was free. They are open until 8 which makes life easy. I would definitely suggest visiting Jersey. Will definitely be going back. ” |
“ | Visited Jersey on Saturday 29 June flying directly from Waterford in Ireland routing via STU and BHD VORs. What can I say? Jersey airport and the flying club offer outstanding value. Latest arrival was 19.15 local, (bar staff will let you into club-house and accept GAR forms).
Fuel was £1.387/l with the 5% discount for AOPA membership. Landing fee was, (I think - I've mislaid the receipt) £15.00 and parking was free. The club house is lovely, friendly and makes great earl-grey tea. The dogs just loved lying in the sun after a long flight.
We did a day trip to Alderney mid-week and Jersey were great each way. The ATC is well used to GA and gave us good altitudes when flying over water, (which hasn't always been the case). The return to Blackpool on Friday 5th July was equally well handled by ATC. (Expect SVFR clearance).
A great journey and a pretty cheap one with fuel at this price, (and VAT free inbound from an EU country). A great destination - just GO! ” |
“ | Went to Jersey direct from Blackpool on 17 September, returning on 21 September. Nice easy flight and the greyhounds slept all the way.
Markings: where to start?
Food and drink: Excellent club house with a café and bar looking out over the airfield - 5!
Runway – It’s a major international airport and has infrastructure to match, so that’s a 5.
Landing Fee: At £12.36 (the 36p is the 3% GST tax), it’s a snip! Added to that is the Jersey Aero club charge of £10.12 which includes access to all their facilities (briefing, café, clubroom, etc, PLUS up to a week’s parking) and you have the best value Commercial Airport in the British Isles – although Guernsey may want to argue the point! Fuel was £1.07/litre (AOPA member’s price – I think it is £1.12 for non-members), and NO GST/VAT. Overall the top mark of 5 doesn’t reflect just how cheap this was. For a direct flight from Blackpool, we filled up to full tanks, (95 litres), paid a landing fee and parking for up to a week and the total charge was £124.31. That’s CHEAP!
ATC: Outstandingly helpful – Jersey Zone (for the class A), Jersey and Guernsey Approach/Radar and Jersey Tower were helpful, professional and accommodating of a SEP which wanted to be as high as possible for an 80 mile sea crossing whilst in the same airspace as a lot of commercial jets and turbo-props. 5.
Friendliness: 5. The Jersey Aero Club are a model to which others should strive. The facilities were excellent, the information desk was very helpful with lots of useful local information. Again, “5” doesn’t really say enough. They also handled the GAR forms inbound and outbound for a real hassle-free journey.
GA pilot briefing facilities: Would put many a commercial operation to shame. Access to UK and French Notams, weather, etc. Flight Plans can be paper copies faxed to ATC (you need 2 hours – but can file the day before if necessary – I filed in the morning for an afternoon departure and spent the rest of the day travelling around the island one last time), or done on-line. Another 5 plus.
Other bits: We hired a Ford Focus for 4 days at a cost of £128 including CDW. (£106 without CDW). Add to that another £20 charge for fuel (but you can bring the car back empty, which we did), and you have outstanding value. I booked direct with Europcar and got a 20% “Aircrew” discount just by asking. When you arrive at Jersey Aero Club, reception phones the car hire company who deliver it to the clubhouse and do the paperwork there – no delivery charge. When dropping off, you just leave your hire car keys at the Aero Club – Simples! This has to be the easiest car hire I have ever done. For those of you, like us, who take your dogs on holiday, they have no problem with having dogs in the car. There are, of course, other car hire companies and I believe that they all do similar arrangements with the Aero Club.
Jersey – what can I add. A wonderful destination with a unique feel. Only one word of caution. The roads are generally VERY narrow with earth, rock or stone walls on both sides and the frequent buses are fast and take no prisoners!
Routing: From Blackpool we routed direct to Llandudno; direct to SWN NDB (Swansea); direct to BHD VOR; direct to Jersey. We had a radar service virtually all the way (Warton, Valley (or Liverpool on return), Cardiff, Exeter and Jersey Zone). London information filled in the gap between Valley and Cardiff. All were extremely helpful and we used Valley/Liverpool to get a de-conflict service to climb/descend to/from VFR on top through cloud.
Overall we loved it – an international, non-UK destination (duty-free…..!) within an easy flight of most of England and Wales. Well worth a visit.

“ | Flew into and out of Jersey last week with an over night stay. It was completely straight forward and stress free. ATC were just brilliant and completely easy to communicate with. The areo club could not have been more helpful and friendly. Definately a place to visit where GA fits in with commercial jets nicely. And the landing fee was very reasonable! ” |
“ | Flew from Blackbushe to Jersey last week for a day trip, It was really quite straight forward, radar cover all the way and Jersey Zone and Approach are very helpful, It was a great day and fabulous weather to. The Aero club are very frendly. We will be going back again. ” |
“ | Went to Jersey last sat/sun - really nice place and facilities and people, helpful to the end. Accomodation resonable and taxi cheap in to town. I agree with the other two reviews. I have been to all the channel islands and would find it hard to choise so i would recommend them all. Alderney is the most different and walking is the best form of transport.Guernsey is a little quieter than Jersey and smaller but similar I feel. Fuel is 66p 56p and 59p Alderney, Guernsey and Jersey. Landing £8 in all of them. Duty free in Alderney and Jersey but Guernsey not available to GA yet. These islands are a good reason to fly - take self plus three friends have a good weekend. Remember GAR and flight plan. And do not worry about the class A, it is a very easy experience. ” |
“ | What a thoroughly refreshing change. This has to be one of the friendliest GA airfields in the country. Amazingly helpful ATC, warmest welcome at the Aero Club- even sorted out a B&B and a taxi! Cheap fuel and £12 landing fee includes A WHOLE WEEKs PARKING!!! can't wait to go back. You should see the fantastic facilities - great FBO, and a bar observation balcony upstairs. The airport has its own GA parking area and even has a GA hold so you don't get squashed by the big boys! ” |
