I am training for my PPL and am fortunate enough to have a friend who I flew in to EGBP with on Sunday around 13:00. If you were thinking of an aerodrome in this neck of the woods, I doubt you could find one much better. The lakes between the aerodrome and Swindon make for an easy visual reference if arriving from the east, even on a day with comparatively poor viz. ATC allowed us to route in direct, inspite of their excellent website suggesting an overhead join being the norm. Landings were either on unlicensed grass or the runway and despite being busy, ATC were helpful and friendly. Loads of parking, easy visual and verbal directions again from ATC in the air and on the ground. GA fees were wonderfully reasonable @ £ 7 for a/c weight up to 750 kgs £ 10 from 751 - 1,650 kgs and just £ 13 up to 2,750 kgs. Fuel truck very easy to see/find (although we didn't need it). ATC we even sympathetic (and not at all gruff) when another pilot made a wrong turn having landed. High viz jackets appear to be the thing to wear on arrival, but we didn't have ours, and nobody appeared to mind (we were not the only ones without). The AV8 Restaurant serves a reasonable selection of food and expect change per head for a tenner, for a bite, with chips salad drink and coffee. In spite of being busy, there we really efficient. Landing fees are payable upstairs at the ATC tower and again they could not have been more welcome or helpful. Go visit. If other aerodromes are this friendly, helpful and welcoming, I can't wait to get my licence and see the UK from the air !
