Rapidly becoming my favourite land away destination, Kemble's Grass runway 26 is nice and firm, even after a wet start to February, as are the parking areas : 10 out of 10. Whilst there are one or two muddier dips in the grass taxiways, this is an airfield in great shape. Nice, friendly ATC (Did PPR by radio en route - no reply on the land line in advance). Friendly reception £ 12 landing fee and great lunch at AV8 which even during a busy half term were rapidly turning over the covers to make room for new diners. Departed from the tarmac after backtracking down the runway. Check Cotswold Airport's website for noise abatement. Circuits at 1,000 ft AAL at time of writing. Gotchayas : Avoid Oaksey and South Cerney. We landed in a left hand circuit following an overhead join and departed on a right hand circuit so just watch the height separation on the downwind leg.

Flew in to Kemble with my dad. Friendly AFIS, great runway and cracking (and reasonably priced) cafe. Landing fee very reasonable, too. Will be coming back again!

Great Air Traffic Control !

My last visit was in 2014 (see below) and I am now most certainly going to make a return visit. If all air traffic controllers were even half as helpful as the gentleman who was on duty after lunch last Saturday, I think more people would make use of the radio. I ashamed to say some of my fellow glider pilots are somewhat caviler about radio usage. Flying an SLMG I have a foot in both the gliding & GA community. Gliding south east from Aston Down, I was obliged to glide past/around (or over) Kemble whilst not particularly wishing to restart the engine. Electing to past the western edge of the zone, I was painfully aware of being close to the take off path for higher performance traffic (where of course the only promising cloud offering lift for miles was located). My transponder was on and I tuned to their radio frequency in anticipation of being an inconvenience at best and a danger at worst. Listening in I then set about finding my thermal. Shortly thereafter the ever vigilant controller indeed alerted departing traffic of my presence. I identified myself and stated my intentions. The controller was very understanding as expressed in his response, manner and tone simply asking that I advise when leaving the frequency. Accordingly I kept him and other traffic appraised of my progress and headed south west to Tetbury and the earliest opportunity. In aviation as in life, one is privileged to have exchanges with wonderful people and if that isn't reason enough to visit Kemble again, I don't know what is !

Had a group fly out today from Sandown to visit the Bristol Brittania,I've never been before and found it a really great place to visit, the welcome we recieved from the Brittania Preservation Group was superb with them picking us up from the restaurant and giving us a tour round the plane then running us back afterwards, found the guys in the tower to be friendly and helpful plus a nice welcome at the AV8 restaurant where we had booked a table where the food was good and not expensive,All in all a great day out,it's a sure thing we will come back again.

Flew into Kemble on Sunday to meet some friends from Halfpenny Green. As everyone says, the welcome and professionalism are always excellent, with friendly help from the tower team and the staff at AV8 restaurant. It's a great place, full of family bustle but easy and safe. We'll continue to make it a favourite.

I am training for my PPL and am fortunate enough to have a friend who I flew in to EGBP with on Sunday around 13:00. If you were thinking of an aerodrome in this neck of the woods, I doubt you could find one much better. The lakes between the aerodrome and Swindon make for an easy visual reference if arriving from the east, even on a day with comparatively poor viz. ATC allowed us to route in direct, inspite of their excellent website suggesting an overhead join being the norm. Landings were either on unlicensed grass or the runway and despite being busy, ATC were helpful and friendly. Loads of parking, easy visual and verbal directions again from ATC in the air and on the ground. GA fees were wonderfully reasonable @ £ 7 for a/c weight up to 750 kgs £ 10 from 751 - 1,650 kgs and just £ 13 up to 2,750 kgs. Fuel truck very easy to see/find (although we didn't need it). ATC we even sympathetic (and not at all gruff) when another pilot made a wrong turn having landed. High viz jackets appear to be the thing to wear on arrival, but we didn't have ours, and nobody appeared to mind (we were not the only ones without). The AV8 Restaurant serves a reasonable selection of food and expect change per head for a tenner, for a bite, with chips salad drink and coffee. In spite of being busy, there we really efficient. Landing fees are payable upstairs at the ATC tower and again they could not have been more welcome or helpful. Go visit. If other aerodromes are this friendly, helpful and welcoming, I can't wait to get my licence and see the UK from the air !

Flew into Cotswold (Kemble) yesterday on a longish dogleg from Sywell to Liverpool. Turned out to be a really good experience. FISO was great. I'd forgotten PPR but he fitted us in - despite being really busy - and handled all the traffic in a very professional way. Tower staff were very friendly - even though I was using an LAA free landing thing. Nice coffee and once again helped away by excellent AFIS. We will be back.

Nice long runway -easy to find- great day out - ATC very very friendly & helpful - on departure gave us a Brize squawk which helped the workload is mostly IMC conditions ! Had a really pleasant surprise when paying landing fee - only £9.50 in May (special) - and a token for a free Tea/coffee in AV8 ! The AV8 cafe was very nice - dogs allowed in the bar area as it was raining. Will be going back soon !

What a magnificent airfield! They had a fly-in and an event to support disabled pilots on the day of the visit. Landing fee was therefore waived with an expectation to donate something for the charity that was running the event, this I felt was a very good arrangement. Excellent A/G service. A very wide range of flying activities going on with aircraft from tiny flexwing flying, to 747 parked – didn’t quite know what that was doing there. Also many other large planes including two belonging to DHL courier service. Obviously, excellent asphalt and grass runways. Marshals looking after you on the ground. Fuel at £2 a litre – don’t know whether this is costly or not as this is the first time I took fuel on an airfield. AV8 is a pretty elaborate restaurant providing good food with excellent service. Definitely on my list of airfields to revisit.

Flew to Kemble on Monday 28th May 2012 in a C172, G-ROLY from Netherthorpe. Lovely high pressure day and after just over an hour we were dead side descending for runway 26. Quite a lot of noise sensitive areas to avoid. Very nice large runway, big enough for 747s and 757s of which some were parked, would have been nice to watch them arrive! Very hot sat out in the sun overlooking the action at AV8 restaurant. AV8 was busy with lots of non pilots visiting as well but the food arrived piping hot. Probably the best steak sandwich I have ever had and the same went for the all day breakfast we ordered, stunning. Not cheap mind at around £17 for both meals with soft drinks. Paid the landing fee a hefty £17.50, bit steep if you ask me. Very friendly though and great Information service from Kemble. Would definitely re visit, even just to get back to AV8 restaurant.

I recently flew into Kemble and can honestly say, I was a bit nervous about all the noise sensitive areas and the gliders encountered on route (they were a bit like mosquitoes at a summer BBQ).. Boy was I glad to be welcomed by an amazing Information service very friendly and helpful would recommend this airfield to any pilot who has not yet been. Nothing quite prepares you for final approach and touchdown flanked by the big Boeings and Airbuses parked on either side of the runway. Truly great experience and exactly the reason I started flying. Kemble is an all round aviation experience from start to finish.

I landed there yesterday after diverting on the way from Oxford to the Compton Abbas fly due to deteriorating weather. However, still wanting to make a day of it we took Kemble as a divertion as the weather looked better over there. It didn't quite work out that way and arriving in low cloud and rain it was good to hear a really helpful response from Kemble Information and to see a nice big runway. The AV8 restaurant was surprisinglly busy for a rainy day and the food was good with a great view of the field as well. About an hour later the weather broke and we were treated to an aerobatic display which included a spitfire so it turned out to be a to notch day. It is clearly a very well run airfield and we were made to feel really welcome by the professional staff. Thanks very much indeed.

Was planning to go to Oxford to pick up my Father and show off my new skills but accidentally called the number for Kemble /Cotswold) instead, (both are strictly PPR)! The lady at the end of the phone was seductively persuasive and having established I’d called the wrong airfield I promised to drop in sometime. Couldn’t raise Oxford on the phone (engaged for over an hour) so re-planned for Kemble. Got slightly off course and found myself looking at Lyneham’s runways - thank goodness Bristol Radar told me the MATZ is closed! (Not sure if that was for weekend or permanently). Kemble Tower was easy and joined downwind on LH circuit. Enjoyed an AV8 burger and took Dad for a ride over the Severn Bridges. On return fuelling was self-service and took credit card. Was disappointed that my fuel uplift didn’t attract a discount on the £17.00 for each landing though! (Oxford waives landing if you take fuel). Noticed afterwards on the Airfield website that a local hotel offers a nice package of free transfers to hotel, good looking rooms, spa and other amenities. Might check that out another weekend!

Kemble is well worth a visit with good runways and facilties. both the grass and hard runways are in very good condition On the day I visited, accompanies by 4 other aircraft, ATC were very good and we were made welcome. The restaurant facilties are excellent however the service was extremely slow. It was over an hour before the 5 of us has all received our various sausage sandwiches and burgers Kemble is very easy to find and Lynham to the SE are always very easy to deal with for MATZ penetration.

Visited Kemble today for 1st time & was a little disappointed. Made contact 10 miles north & was told to stand by, never received any reply so called again 3 miles from air field. From there web site cafe looks great, service was slow & food average. When leaving I was waiting 20 mins after informing the tower I was ready to depart . May be I caught them on a bad day but it seemed to me locals get major priority over visitors

Flew into Kemble on Sunday 13th with friends in two other aircraft, easy to find, great ATC, great runway, as mentioned before the landing fee is a trifle steep, £16 for a 172. Becky and Will in AV8 were brilliant, they reserved a table for us and the food was both very nice and reasonable. This was my first visit, but I would not hesitate to return.

We flew into Kemble ( Cotswolds International) last Saturday from Fairoaks, Farnbrough Radar and Brize all the way, conditions were not to bad, but a little challanging on finals with a gusting X wind. AV8 was open for lunch which was quite good value and a reasonable choice, in very pleasent surroundings. Landing fees I thought were on the high side £16 for a PA28 but I guess they have to pay for the upkeep of the airfield some how, it was kept in very nice condition.

Right now Kemble's main attraction would seem to be the outdated (or maybe not so) airliners that are there to be broken up. Nice to land where a 747 is standing! Great runway and good food. However, when I was there they were test running F1 cars on the active runway which wasn't managed as well as it could be since I saw one plane have to go-around due to the land-lubber on the runway.

Flew into Kemble from Fairoaks last Sunday to visit the Vintage Aircraft event, really brilliant day, we only managed to get a 9am slot however the weather made excellent flying conditions (for once) The AV8 cafe dispite being extremely busy managed to cope very well, a full English on the terrace in the sun was ,very civilised and credit to all the catering staff who coped extremely well. We had a great day, browsing around the static aircraft and the trade stalls and watching the flying display before making our way home. Well done Kemble, we will be returning.

Visited Kemble for the first time this weekend - trying out my new GPS - very handy for navigating through the nearby MATZ's, and the controllers at Kemble made joining the circuit and avoiding the nearby villages a relative breeze. Touched down and was greeted with a 'Welcome to Kemble' and guided nicely to parking near the tower.

Went to pay landing fee - very friendly in the office, but a bit steep for a PA28 at £16. AV8 restaurant was professional, clean, good quality food at pub type prices. Quite a few interesting aircraft both static and flying, with some aerobatic entertainment whilst eating lunch. Overall an impressive and professional GA friendly airfield which I will happily visit again.

Flew into Kemble last week (Dec 08) Very good facilities other than the grass parking and taxi way. It was cutting up badly and we thought at one point we would be stuck. AV restaurant was excellent, food first class and quite busy. Treated to a great fly past by the resident (I think) Hunter. I had read a previous report and studied the website for the sensitive areas and there seems to be loads of small hamlets and villages to avoid. Dog leg short final and big hump in the runway caught me out and I was to much nose up, not my best landing but a few other guys report having the same problem at Kemble. Probably being kind to me I suspect but the hump in the centre of the runway is very pronounced. Would definitely go back but maybe when the grass has dried out.

I flew to Kemble early this morning, against a 30Kt headwind !, I've read a lot about Kemble, but never actually visited, Given all the problems that they have with locals being noise sensitive, I worked myself in to a state of paranoia , zig-zagging around every house and village I could see !, Kemble AFIS were very friendly and helpful, with a 'welcome to Kemble' as I landed. The lady in the ops room was also very cheery and friendly. The AV8 restaurant was great, a lovely bacon bagette, next time i'll go back for lunch. A great airfield, very friendly.

Many thanks to the A/G guys for slotting me into the circuit without fuss last Saturday when I asked for a precautionary landing to check my fuel state (the gauges were all over the place that day). Thanks also for waiving the landing fee. I found using the self-service fuel pump counter intuitive and would have felt more comfortable if a set of instructions had been avialable. Otherwise a good experience and we'll be back.

A really good airfield. From the start I was impressed as the A/G operators were extraordinarily helpful and friendly in what was a maze of taxiways. I didn't try the food as the returent was packed but the coffee was excellent and quickly delivered. All the people that I had dealings with seemed to be both welcoming and helpful and really can't fault the place. But, for me it lacked something. I can't quite place it but perhaps it was just too big to feel as friendly as some of the smaller airfields. Good base for a family day out but ...

Went to Kemble on Saturday 7th April. What a treat! Flew in from Blackbushe on a somewhat hazy morning - no problem spotting the airfield due to some helpfully placed 747's. AFIS were a great help both when I PPR'd and on arrival. Everone I spoke to was really helpful and friendly and the food in AV8 was really good. What a magnificent burger. For the aviation enthusiast it is a must. Thanks to all at Kemble for an enjoyable visit.

Visited Kemble recently. Lovely airfield, huge diversity of traffic (there was a Hunter and a flexwing microlight sharing the ATZ when I turned up!) but everyone seems to 'play well together'. The FISOs were helpful to the point of seeming to have a sixth sense for when I was feeling lost on all those taxiways!

The food in the restaurant (café doesn't do it justice) was excellent, albeit not cheap but they only do breakfasts in the morning for some inexplicable reason ;-) I think it would be a good trip to convince partners or friends that there's more to visiting other airfields than greasy spoon and bacon butties.

The noise abatement isn't as complicated as it looks reading about it - the villages to avoid are easy to spot from the air.

Visited Kemble for lunch with some fellow ukga'ers. ATC was professionally relaxed. Food at AV8 was reasonably priced and portioned, and you get a good view from the deck. Everything from microlights to big jets for you to look at.

As operations at Brize Norton have now moved to Fairford until Spring 2006 you need to keep an eye out for unexpected heavy metal if approaching from/deaprting to the south or southeast.

Just done my SEP / IMC renewal there and have to say its a buzzing airfield now - bizjets, occasional wide body for storeage, occasional fast jet, and lots of GA stuff. Two flying clubs , Ultimate High, the Bristol Museum now getting a new roof, and assorted orther ops. all in all a good visit and AV8 is open more useful hours now

Been to Kemble a few times and think it's a great little place, one thing to watch though......last time we went (it was a Thursday I think) although the field was open 'til 18:00, AV8 closed at 17:00..!

If you are planning on getting some food/drink when you visit, then it'd be worth checking with AV8 directly that they will be open if it's towards the end of the day.

Excellent. Thought the ATC for G-VFWE was incredible : all that non-radio to avoid! Visited several times this year - only disappointment was the appalling "Festival of Free Flight" which wasn't in anyway free (£15) and there was no sign of a Festival going on. Just some rather sad microlight pilots.......and a broken fairground ride.

Although based on a farm strip, Kemble is my "local" in terms of the nearest hard runway with any kind of service to offer.
Frankly, I am full of admiration for the people who run it and the people who put their money into the venture when it seemed doomed to be flogged off by the MOD for the best possible price so the local authority could build yet another housing estate. Well done to all concerned. I am really pleased that the PFA rally went off so well. You deserve all the luck and success. In the long run we will all benefit.

Very nice airfield. Good restaurant (AV8), but the chef seems to wander off without notice, leaving people with no dinner. Also, I think they need to keep AV8 open for longer into the evening. Radio guys are pretty friendly, and handle quite a busy circuit. PFA rally has definitely found a good home. Kemble is really fantastic at organising things -- G-VFWE, PFA Rally, Kemble Air Day; they all go off perfectly and with big crowds too.
