“ | Nice enough PPR airfield, just to the North-East of Nottingham and 5 nm due East of Hucknall. Not too hard to spot, on top of a ridge and with a modern prison standing out just to the North of the departure end of runway 08; that means a slightly offsett final for runway 26. Unlike many other unlicensed airfields, its frequency (123.05) is manned. Preferential runway is 26 due to prevailing winds, but 08 can be used for take-offs - a slight downslope helps on the take-off run.
ukga.com shows 08/26 length as 550m, but on calling for PPR I was told it was more like 600m; either way, it proved more than enough for a Robin DR400-160 with 2 POB, 75% fuel and 1 stage of flaps. The surface is smooth, the grass short, runway edges marked with cones.
Our aircraft was met by the gentleman who answered the radio, otherwise Lambley airfield was deserted. I was assured there is no landing fee - a seasonal thing perhaps? A few pounds would be OK for the upkeep of this nice airfield considering the standard of the runway.
Another plane landed a few minutes later, otherwise the place seemed very quiet for a sunday. The compact clubhouse seemed to have all the necessary amenities - but there was no time to sample it!
Well worth a visit in the spring or summer. We'll be back! ” |
