Flew into L'Pool this week. In summary a great place to visit. For a large airport I found everyone very helpful and friendly. Radar are well used to GA aircraft as there is a large flying school onsite. Fees were £34.20 handling, £40.14 Landing and £9.95 parking making a total of £83.99 for a few hours stay. Ravenair are the GA Handler Tel: + 44 (0) 151 486 6161 Fax: + 44 (0) 151 486 5151 Mobile: + 44 (0) 7712 129333 Email: ops@ravenair.co.uk £15 in a taxi into the City centre.

I flew into Liverpool Airport today, 8 August, from Blackpool to visit the Crowne Plaza - Liverpool Airport, (formerly the art-deco 1930’s terminal for Speke Airport). The flight was to take some Liverpool born friends for a treat: see Liverpool from the air and have afternoon tea at the terminal from where they saw the Beatles arrive and went on their first foreign holiday to Majorca. On the best weather day we have had for weeks, it went well! It’s a long time since I flew in on my first cross-country, (and parked on the main apron for about £12.00!), and these days, parking is at the GA terminal and handling is mandatory. However, Liverpool Air Services, (LAS - part of the Ravenair Group I believe), were excellent. I was marshaled into place; a bowser arrived, (but after a 20 minute flight from Blackpool, not needed); and, best of all, a crew bus arrived and drove us straight from the ramp to the hotel and picked us up later. They were very well organized, friendly and efficient. Of course, we should expect no less for a landing, parking and handling fee of £83.99 for three hour; but so many times, I’ve had to pay for handling that clearly wasn’t any such thing, that it was actually a pleasure doing business with them. (And let’s face it; this is an international airport, close to the city centre with lots of CAT all the time, so it is pretty much what I was expecting). The airport runways, taxi-ways and apron were, as we should expect, excellent, as was Liverpool’s ATC. Although I haven’t flown into Liverpool for nearly 20 years, I use them a lot when transiting their airspace and they are always outstandingly helpful. The way they slot GA into CAT is very slick: from the north, they ask you to aim for the Jaguar “mushroom”, (a water tower within the Jaguar, (ex-Ford) factory, about one nm north of the 27 threshold). An orbit hold allows them to slot you between CAT very quickly and limits the wait. Well done ATC! LAS provide a lounge with tea and coffee on tap, (plus biscuits) and a very comfortable lounge with nice clean loos, etc. The Crowne Plaza hotel is well worth a visit. It includes the original 1930’s terminal and control tower, (Grade II listed) and an exceptionally helpful staff who allowed us to visit the only bedroom, (the honeymoon suite) which has doors out onto the old terrace overlooking the former apron. On the apron were a HS748 cockpit, a Bristol Britannia and the wings of what looked to be a meteor. At the front of the hotel was a DH Dragon Rapide, (or close relation). All in all, this is not a cheap destination, but as a special treat, (maybe with an overnight in the city), it is easy, friendly and very different.

Had to visit Liverpool John Lennon today from Andrewsfield for a local business meeting. I can only say that ATC and Handling Agent was the best I have come across. We were made to feel we were really wanted unlike some major airports I can mention. I am very envious of anyone who keeps their A/C there. Top airport.

Flew into John Lennon last week. Superb service from ATC, slotted us in between a RyanAir and EasyJet, and then on to to the GA handling agent who were efficient, helpful and not too expensive considering the quality of the airport. It's a busy place and essential to ensure you are fully briefed before.

Well worth a visit in my opinion.

Despite the increasing number of Ryanair, Easyjet and other commercial flights Liverpool remains friendly. ATC is helpful and is mostly good at slotting you in between them - you do have to be sharpish though at times. If you happen to arrive at peak period when the aforementioned are all returning from wherever they've been for the morning - usually around 1230 local - you could well find yourself holding outside the zone and at various points within it.

compared to a lot of other busy comercial airports liverpool is GA friendly with 4 flying schools based on the GA apron plus has the benifit of 24 hrs, ILS/DME & radar.
