Fantastic friendly airport with great facilities and helpful staff. Having learnt to fly at Liverpool, I underwent differences training at City Airport Manchester and now have a non equity share in a Warrior 2 based there. Very family orientated with a play area for young kids. Very welcoming tower and helpful staff and you'll notice the top notch ATC service from PPR to shut down. When the fire service see the kids, they always make a fuss of them and my two lads know most of the staff by name. Good home cooked food and ample parking. Stunning airport and a must if you haven't already been.

Visited Barton airfield on 17/06/2014 in G-ROLY, a C172 based at Netherthorpe. Outbound routing was via the TNT VOR and then the Low Level Route. We had a transponder failure meaning we called up Manchester approach just to ensure they were happy with our transit. There were no issues locating the airfield and we used 09L for landing. The others were not open due to WIP which was subject to NOTAM. Landing fee was a little pricey however a great breakfast followed with free drinks using the vouchers provided by the desk on payment of the landing fee. Seems a busy airfield all in all. Just a shame the runways are not a little smoother, hopefully the work in progress will sort this out. We departed to the north east and soon entered cloud. We flew back IFR at around 3000ft and landed back at Netherthorpe 55 minutes later. Looking forward to returning in the future. |

Dropped in earlier this month benefitting from a free landing voucher in Flyer. Perhaps thats why the circuit was so busy on arrival with five, but the AFIS calmly kept things under control. A busy and lively airfield with plenty of variety from microlights to fixed wing and helicopters. The cafe was busy with many families and those sightseeing, plus ground testing of what looked like self-build (or restored) aircraft. Combined with a friendly welcome in the office, certainly a pleasant experience. However the standard of the grass runway, rutted and muddy, left something to be desired
s this.

Flew into Barton today to visit my son. We had a pleasant hour watching the Tiger Moth and the other comings and goings. The new restaurant is very smart but a bit "corporate hospitality" in atmosphere. We had a cup of tea but didn't stop for food - though the menu looked pretty reasonable. But the runway (27L) was a bit rough and muddy - and that's in a heatwave! I suspect in winter it resembles a ploughing match.
