Pilot reviews of Marshland Airfield

21 Aug 19 - Liam Sandie - Barnsley

Visited Marshland airfield on 21/08/2019 as part of a 3 airfield land-away day in G-ROLY a C172 based at Netherthorpe (EGNF). I was passenger for the flight over but took the opportunity to complete a short circuit to log the airfield in my log book.

PPR was easy to arrange and the landing fee is simply left in a metal box on the wall of the building. Only one other aircraft was on the ground (possibly the owners) G-MZMX.

The runway is nice and long but quite bumpy, no issues really for Cessna types but anything more fragile might struggle.

The airfield is actually below sea level much like Amsterdam (EHAM) so this was good to get in the log book.

Not much in the way of facilities but a real grass roots airfield.

  • Quality and value of food / drink: 2

  • Landing fee / handling charges: 2
  • ATC / AFIS / A/G service: 2
  • Friendliness of welcome: 4
  • GA pilot briefing facilities: 2

Visited Marshland on 04/09/13 as I wanted to go to an airfield in the UK that was in fact 'under the sea'. Marshland is at -6 below sea level so it was a must for the log book. The owner was very friendly and happy for me to use the strip at no cost. The pilot book in form is in a metal case nailed to a hangar wall. The runway was bumpy in places but not too bad, I've definitely experienced worse. Very happy with my visit!

Had a jaunt over to Marshland today (Sunday) from Conington. Another new destination for the log book. Telephoned for PPR on Friday as it's office hours. Got a return call later to say 'no problem'. The airfield has a Grass 850m X 20m runway orientated 03/21. Trees on the approach to 03. 21 approach is clear. There is a wind sock but it's virtually invisible from the air. Circuits left hand. The surface is really good and level in most parts but beware of a hump across the runway about 100m from the 21 end. I never caught it on the landing but did on the take off. Could cause a problem if your not too aware. It threw me in the air prematurely! Runway does have fixed lighting. Radio was not manned. Only facilities on site are 100L fuel by arrangement. The airfield movement book is on the outside hangar wall. Enjoyed the visit and recommend, ideal for a picnic but would ask first. Oh and no landing fee
