“ | Flew to Netherthorpe on Friday 9th October from Blackpool. I always find first visits to grass airfields “interesting”, mainly due to the difficulty of spotting them. However, plenty of aircraft parked at the airfield made this particularly easy as did an overhead join. The runways are fairly short, but plenty of room for a DR400 and the surfaces were well-marked and reasonably smooth. The reception from all the Netherthorpe team was very friendly and the café was welcoming and had a wide menu available. The landing fee of only £5.00 was a snip. A very enjoyable visit and one I look forward to making again. ” |
“ | Flew into Netherthorpe for first time 7th August 2015. Warm welcome out on Apron from Judith, who introduced me to Johnny who was on work experience, and volunteered to help clean aircraft! (Don't expect that every time!) The Skyways restaurant was excellent, and like the wifi, readily available to visitors. I was flying and dining alone and a couple of members came over to introduce themselves and invited me to join them. Can't be friendlier than that. Refuelling was straight forward and assistance on hand if required. Also Judith really helpful on train and taxis. 06/24 good but sloping from one end to other which means in lighter winds take off and landing can sometimes be in opposing directions. Excellent overnight stop. Will definitely visit again. ” |
“ | Took my first introductory Flying lesson with Phoenix here today, all the guys there were very polite, seems a nice set up, looking forward to completing my PPL here. ” |
“ | Flew into Netherthorpe a couple of weeks back. A phone call for PPR yielded a useful briefing and a PPR number (to be quoted on first contact with Netherthorpe radio). The biggest challenge was identifying the field (it's very green and merges into the landscape!) Landing / take off on the short strip was no problem at all in my Cessna 150 though might be an issue in a bigger / heavier aircraft. The clubhouse / restaurant was excellent, the activity outside provided good entertainment for an hour or so, and the friendly help and advice from the locals made all the difference to what would otherwise have been quite a daunting departure. I will definitely be back. ” |
“ | Flew with Phoenix Flying School. A super grass strip field that even has a crosswind runway. The A/C were superbly maintained and the Instructors and staff were great. A restaurant next door was for full meals with a view of the airfield. One can sit outside here, or "hangar-fly" next door. Well worth a visit, 268° off the Gamston VOR. You will pass over an old airfield pointing at EGNF. ” |
“ | What a great place. We rang for our PPR and were briefed over the phone and given a PPR number. Arrived overhead...very busy but all safe and organised. It isnt the easiest place to land but whats life without a little challenge. Smooth runways and easy parking. (we picked a free landing day although we would have been free anyhow) AG radio was great and organised the many visitors. Great food and friendly people making us very welcome. Great place make the effort but be carefull this isnt a place to drop your guard but well worth the visit. ” |
“ | I am learning to fly at the Phoenix flying school at netherthorpe. It is a great atmosphere with friendly instructors and i always come out of a lesson feeling that i have learnt a lot. I would recommend learning to fly there to anyone, it has been one of the best decisions of my life :D ” |
“ | A definative UKGA airfield to my mind. Great food, great attitudes, interesting but well kept runways, fabulous atmosphere. And free to Sherburn Pilots !! I guess its the short and challanging runways that stop the hoards descending but thats a shame as this is the ideal venue for a day out spent pottering about and doing nothing much except reading the paper. I never came accross the briefing facilities but I suspect they are available easily just by asking one of the ever helpful locals. ” |
“ | Visited Netherthorpe on 19 November to go to Dukeries Engineering who are based at the airfield. Although the airfield is small it's easy to find when coming from the West - look for the motorway services on the M1 and then go East from there. Runways are short but fine if you are used to operating from a private strip or a grass airfield such as Barton. Didn't get to have lunch, but looked like others were having a fanstatic spread at resonable cost. Will definately be back. ” |
“ | Popped in to Netherthorpe again on Thursday 17 Nov for lunch.
Excellent Clubroom with a good menu and excellent chef. No landing fee if in a PFA Permit aircraft.

“ | Flew into Netherthorpe today. A very friendly welcome. As the restaurant wasn't open yet, the lady on the flight desk made me and my passenger a cup of tea. You can't ask for more really. ” |
“ | I visited Netherthorpe today, 9/05/05 I can only agree with earlier correspondents terrific site as we arrived about lunchtime we were invited to use the restaurant if we fancied a spot of lunch. The prices were very reasonable although we did not avail ourselves on this occassion, but I am sure I will be back.
Congratulations to all concerned in operating a classic site. ” |
“ | If you go to Netherthorpe on a Sunday you will, in exchange for a very reasonable amount of cash, be provided with one of the best Sunday lunches anywhere. You might even need to do a new weight and balance calculation just to make sure you can get off those challenging runways!
Netherthorpe is a great little airfield with a warm welcome and a nice atmosphere. There is also a thriving community of homebuilders flying permit aircraft old and new.
Well worth a visit. ” |
“ | I am revalidating my licence at Netherthorpe with Pheonix, a friendly group who have settled on a fantastic airfield. 36 is very short, very short, but having landed on it twice with my instructor, a challenge and fine in the right conditions. Club house is great, in fact why did I ever fly from anywhere else!!!!!! ” |
“ | Hi, I've been flying from Netherthorpe for nearly 3 years, I completed my PPL and can say that athe airfield is a delight to fly from. At first sight the field looks very small but if your set up is true then the final approach looks after its self. The Club house is a delight with excellent food and good friendly staff/members are always on hand to help. ” |
