Pilot reviews of Newcastle Airport

“ | Flew into Newcastle on 11/12/12 arriving early on what was a very cold morning. As per the review preceding this, I used Samson as my handling agent. They were absolutely excellent; very friendly on the phone and upon arrival. They provide you with a very comfortable exec lounge and pilot briefing room with PC etc. Coffee's etc are free as is wifi (I was in Newcastle on Business). Regarding booking in and out, Sanmson deal with all the ATC communication making the whole experience quite seamless. Costs? Well it did cost £72.00 incl vat - that covered ATC charges, Landing Fees, Handling, and Parking. To be honest I thought the charges were fair given that this is fair sized airport which made me as a GA Pilot feel very welcome. ” |

“ | Flew into Newcastle from Blackpool on Wednesday 16 May for a business meeting. We used Saxon as our handling agent, (despite what the CAA say about handling should not be mandatory – just try to get in without it!!) To be fair, Saxon were excellent, (I’ve used them at Newcastle before as well as at Norwich). Good facilities, lounge, briefing, free(!!) tea/coffee, etc. Landing fee was £27, parking £6 and handling £30, all plus VAT. A jot under £80 all in is expensive compared to most GA airfields, but for pure convenience, I think it is a fair price for an international airport. (Plus no need for yellow jackets or ridiculous levels of security by using Saxon).
As you would expect, ATC was excellent and have no trouble mixing IFR CAT and VFR GA with minimal delays. One word of warning. When calling for engine start prior to departure, they immediately gave us our taxi clearance limit, plus departure routing, altitude and squawk. Nothing earth-shattering, but we weren’t expecting it so early – you have been warned. Avgas available by bowser if needed, but café is in the terminal on the opposite side of the airfield.

“ | Excellent flying school, fantastic team of instructors with varying styles of teaching, experience and background to match your learning style. Has a good learning environment, with thorough briefings, plenty of support and very easy airspace to fly in. ” |

“ | Newcastle Woolsington is a very good airport to visit with it's good facilities at the Newcastle Aero Club where you can park up, sign off and have a good laugh with all the other pilots.
My only concern about visiting Newcastle is the landing charge. If you fly a light aircraft such as a piper warrior or a cessna skylane, it will cost you £14.69 which is said to go up 50% in 2004. Over all, a good airport to visit! ” |
