Visited Newquay (EGHQ) from Netherthorpe (EGNF) on Monday 4th June 2013 in G-ROLY, a C172 based at Netherthorpe. We had 3POB.
Routing was via TNT VOR and towards BCN VOR then coasting out from Porthcawl to Ilfracombe and following the coast.
Visibility was superb. We had life jackets for the water crossing.
I had filed a flightplan with AFPEx and we had booked in with the new Flynqy. The school had moved from Plymouth which had now closed.
Finding the airfield was easy and we joined left base runway 12.
The new Thompson 787 Dreamliner was doing crew training and circuits and had been the day before too. This was great to see! and luckily we had managed to land prior to it.
Upon landing we were met by Flynqy staff and the fuel truck within a couple of minutes, almost too soon as we were not ready.
The staff were very friendly and we only needed one high visibility between the 3 of us. We walked around the pathway to the Flynqy cabin where the landing and fuel fees were paid and I filed the return flightplan via AFPEx.
Upon booking back out with Flynqy we walked back to our aircraft but was met by a security man who drove quickly up to us almost in a panic about what we were doing. He then took all our details, not really sure what was going on with him.
We got the ATIS and requested start up and the route back to Netherthorpe was the same although we a headwind took 2 hours 50 instead of 2 hours for the flight out.
Great airfield, large runway, ILS and full radar, lovely views, what is not to like about this airport! Nice to see Flynqy pushing business through too to get this airport back on the GA map.
Look when the last review was on here for EGHQ.
We will be back.

To meet civil certification requirements, the old RAF St Mawgan runway has been shortened and narrowed (to maintain the perspective), re-surfaced and re-lit.

I recently found myself forced to divert due to bad weather. My flight from Kemble to Truro for a business meeting was nearly called off when I decided to give St Mawgan a call. I passed my details as usual and requested a weather diversion. I was given a squak code and matz transit, and was asked to join right base for 31. The runway was suitable for most comercial and military traffic with ILS. Two Tornado aircraft departed after we cleared the runway. The southwest side of the field is Military and the Northeast side civilian. I was greeted by an handling van and operator from Midwest Executive. I winced at the thought of the bill for this one. The handling chap chocked her up and took my order to top up the tanks. Another brand new spacious van arrived to take us and our luggage to the terminal. Midwest Exec handle all inbound/outbound un-scheduled GA transfers on the field and have a small modern office and lounge in the commercial terminal. They were able to arrange transportation; taxi or hire car. They had full access to weather info online and shuttled us to /from the aircraft. And were extremely helpful even to the point of coming in early on Sunday morning so we could depart at the crack of dawn! Ah.. but at what cost? The landing fee was £15 there was a one off handling fee of £20 fuel was .92p/ltr and over night parking was £4.95 cheaper than the car park! Not cheap over all but a very pleasent and efficient way to fly to cornwall. In the end I was delayed for 2 days by the weather. So it was very reasuring to know the plane was safe and ready to go when the weather cleared. Thanks Andy!
