Visited Old Buckenham on 17/05/2016 in G-ROLY a 172 based at Netherthorpe. This was an easy flight almost, speaking to Waddington LARS and then Marham. The PPR was arranged online via the website and no one was available to speak to on the number. By all accounts the airfield is mainly open on the weekends and we visited on a Tuesday.
Despite this the airfield was easy to find and the tarmac runway was in good order. There was a cabin open for self service drinks but the coffee machine was not working. We settled for cold drinks and a chocolate bar. You then pay the landing fee and for the food and leave in a security box.
The airfield is obviously very active at some times with lots of history and military vehicles on site.
Would like to visit on a Friday or weekend to get a proper feel for the place as the café has good signs of being good for food!

Gentleman I talked to on phone for a PPR was so very welcoming and friendly and offered good information about the field. Field very easy to find with long asphalt runway standing out and Snetterton racecourse is a good landmark in the line of runway 07. Lot of useful information on their website http://www.oldbuck.com/. A/G service was very faint in readability. Overall, friendly and pleasant atmosphere on this nice little airfield. Circuit is unduly long drawn because of having to go around and North of Attleborough. They have a small café. It was busy in the café with standing room only and service overwhelmed by the demand at the time of my visit just after 1 in the afternoon. Taking of food orders was therefore temporarily suspended. Sitting available outside with good view of active runways. Landing fee was £10. Why does it say on UKGA website technical details “Microlights: No”? when two Skyrangers (one of them mine) were warmly welcome? This comment on UKGA almost put me off choosing to fly to this nice airfield but a phone call for PPR sorted that out.

Very friendly club feel to the place. From the helpful phone call for PPR (or you can use their website form), clear noise abatement circuit, good A/G radio (helpful directions to the fuel bowser) through to convivial atmosphere in the cafe. £10 landing fee, or you can join as an associate for £60 and enjoy free landings there and some partner airfields all year. Landing on 25 hard you fly directly overhead a scrapyard but there are no particular hazards to avoid. Radar service from Lakenheath (the nearby American base). It was unusual to hear them give out the pressure setting to their own aircraft in inches while we got millibars/HectoPascals. Jimmy's cafe is run by an American who offers a range of hearty American-named dishes, but there's still a good old English breakfast available too. All at very reasonable prices.

Had a pleasant fly-away from Sandtoft - making my first visit to Old Buckenham. I would like to revisit but have to rely on lifts.

Old Buck is my home airfield, and I have the pleasure of flying out of there as often as possible. As already mentioned, the airfield can be busy, especially at w/e with para drops, visiting GA, as well as contending with Hercules from Watton on low level sorties - although this adds to the charm of flying in.
Local area nav is easy and interesting, plenty of active and disused airfields in the Norfolk area. Cross country is good too - only 30 mins to the coast, either north to Cromer or East to Yarmouth, or a bit longer takes you down to Ipswich and on to Southend and Kent.
A/G controllers are v. friendly and always accommodating, as is the CFI at Old Buck Aero Club.
A nice airfield to be based at, and to visit; especially as the summer months will (hopefully) be with us soon!
Don't forget the airshow Sun 24 June 2007 - see more at www.oldbuck.com
