“ | Flew into Old Hay last Wednesday (6 May)from Biggin - only about 10-15 minutes flying time but I wanted a short flight to somewhere I hadn't landed before. Very nice strip with r/w 09/27 at 680m so fine for the Warrior I was in. Although there is a frequency it was not manned so i made a couple of blind calls on the way in. Easy to find as located right next to the railway line. I had phoned up for PPR beforehand and, although the strip is, I believe, often unattended I received a friendly welcome, cup of tea and a sarni from a dude called Dan who was there at the time. Landing fee is GBP 10 (if there is anyone there to give it to). Wind was right across the runway but as the strip is surrounded by trees it is quite sheltered once you're into ground effect, so again that didn't present any undue difficulty. The only building on the field is a hangar with a small assortment of Auster/Cub type aircraft. It is located in picturesque countryside and it was a genuinely pleasurable experience flying in there and chewing the fat for an hour or so with Dan - and, by sheer coincidence, renowned display pilot, airshow commentator, and all round GA superstar Brendan O'Brien, who happened to be there at the time. Happy days! ” |
