Pilot reviews of Papa Westray Airfield

“ | Like all the orkney airstrips, a charming little spot. No ATC, & not a great deal in the way of facilities but there are loos & a briefing room which doubles as a waiting room for the once-a-day loganair flight so you can get the current wind & weigh your baggage. There is also an unmanned a/g radio. Kirkwall is the nearest service 23nm to the south with ILS in case diversion is needed...but oh the sense of freedom......!!! Feels like your very own airstrip. Runways are all well maintained though probably best to stick to the hardcore after heavy rain which has 50 & 40 yard grass runoffs at each end bordered by 4 foot walls. No problem getting a PA28-161 in and out at MTOW in Nil wind at 20 celsius. ” |
