Stephen Nuttall - 0.5 NM North of Inskip VRP - Fly from Blackpool
“ | We visited Plockton on Saturday evening from Oban to take an evening meal at the Plockton Inn. My third visit, but the first with my wife or in the DR400 rather than the C172. Plockton is owned by the council and managed by PDG Helicopters. A phone call to their man on the spot gives you PPR and local advice. Payment is £10 for a SEP in the honesty box next to the parking area.
Plockton is unmanned, but has a dedicated frequency for position calls. The only facilities at Plockton Airfield are the honesty box and self-service fuel for Jet A1. However, the airstrip itself is in superb condition with a very good tarmac surface and a well-mown grass parking area. Beware trees close to the threshold if landing from the north. As the strip is on top of a hill, turbulence and wind-shear can be present in strong winds, but we flew in and out in the evening and had virtually no wind. The village of Plockton itself is only a 15 minute walk away and has two great pubs which I can recommend: the Plockton Inn and the Plockton Hotel. Both do great food, (especially seafood) and are very friendly. The village itself is lovely and you may remember it as the village of Lochdubh in the TV series of Hamish Macbeth and from the film the Wicker Man.
It’s a lovely flight to Plockton whatever route you take. We came in from Oban in the evening and were overawed by the spectacular scenery as we wound our way through the islands to and from Plockton. A lovely airfield and village, both well worth a visit with easy B&B if you want to stay overnight. Just watch your fuel planning as the nearest airfields with fuel will be Oban, Stornoway and Inverness, none of which are actually all that near…..!
