We called in 29th August 2011 enroute Perranporth -> Plymouth -> Sandown (IOW) -> Lydd -> Elstree (Home). The airfield is closing soon. Actually, it's not an 'airfield' it's a fully-fledged airport (I used to fly there with Brymon Airways on business years ago and it was thriving). It has check-in desks, scanners, security points etc. All dead, all empty. Like a regional airport in the USSR used to be (yes, I've been at some of those) except quieter and even more depressing. But it is dead. Sad. There are lots of stories about why this significant and well-equipped regional airport is going to be destroyed but all I can say is that it strikes me as a scandalous waste of a brilliant resource for a part of the UK poorly served by other infrastructure (road, rail). Don't go there. Highest AVGAS prices known to me and offhand bordering on rude reception at the tower when paying the fees. 'What is your next destination?' 'Sandown' 'What is the ICAO code for that never heard of it' Doh! I can understand the staff there are facing job loss and not that happy but the reception at the tower was frankly rude and sullen. The only bright moment for me was the terrific helpful guy who runs the pumps. The fuel is expensive but he's a friendly and helpful guy and gets 5 stars for courtesy and efficiency. A bright moment in a dismal visit.
