Stephen Nuttall - 0.5 NM North of Inskip VRP - Fly from Blackpool
“ | Flew into Pocklington on Sunday 1 August with my wife and our greyhounds to spend the day with friends who live nearby.
I’d wanted to visit here for some time and I was very impressed. They have 2 hard runways which were in “fair” condition – however, I was advised to land on the adjacent (very wide) grass strip which runs alongside both hard runways. I have to say that they were the smoothest grass I have landed on for some time.
The PPR briefing was quite stringent about being aware of the glider flying (the airfield is owned by the Wolds Gliding Club), but on the day, the A/G was extremely informative and helpful as well as being extremely friendly and this was a non-issue.
The café was in a double decker bus (!!) and smelled wonderful – but with my wife in tow, I was banned from the bacon butties! (I understand that the Wolds gliding club originated with a group of York bus drivers and conductors – hence, maybe, the bus?)
They also have a new clubhouse which was exceptionally impressive with a bar, meeting rooms and loos which include shower cubicles too. There was a lot of history displayed in the club house: Pocklington was a wartime bomber airfield in 6 Group, (and to top it all, there was an ex-Spitfire pilot doing the paperwork).
Sometimes I find airfields with a certain “something” about them which make them a really enjoyable destination. Pocklington is definitely one of those for me.
Landing fee for a C172 was £10: the friendliness was free.
