“ | After flying for a couple of hours from Sywell to Caernarfon and getting stiff legs and back from being sat still for so long, I decided I wanted a breather on the return trip. With the day dragging on, my plan of Welshpool was out as they closed at 5pm. A quick call to Pound Green for PPR and they were all too welcoming, happy for me to pop in briefly on the way past 'in a couple of hours or so'.
Although a grass runwayed farm strip, it was relatively easy to find the two runways once within a couple of miles, for a quick right base onto the three km corridor for 16.
Quick stop, sign the logbook in the caravan, have a chat, get ridiculed for flying one of those three-axis things, and back on our way.
Thanks for the welcome! ” |
“ | Lovely spot, welcoming owner, proper atmosphere Great example of how good a Farmstrip can be. ” |
“ | Wonderful little airfield. Well kept and a brand new club house. No landing charge and even free hot drink is available. The owner came over and chatted and could not have been friendlier. Surface of the grass runway is good but get the speed on approach right as it slopes down in both directions. I rang before which is most important as they are so welcoming. Called on 129.825. Halfpenny Green about 8 miles away and rather busy so keep a good look out. Kept the noise to the minimum. They have just fitted an electric point so one can bring ground crew in the camper van / caravan next to the club house. Two pubs a few minutes stroll, quiet and plenty of interesting flyers coming in. As close to paradise as one will find. Thank you. ” |
“ | I was forced to land here in my Tiger Moth on Friday 18 June. I was caught in bad weather to the north and decided that prudence demanded I land. I was looking into other fields / a golf course, unsure I would make it to Pound Green. Once i landed, Edwin came and helped me cover the cockpits, made me a cup of tea and showed me round the hangers. The field was a life saver, and Edwin particularly friendly and helpful. 10/10! ” |
“ | A truely wonderful Microlight Airfield. We used Pound Green as a rest and refuel point whilst on our flight from Ireland to the Isle of Wight for Spamfield. The owner had fuel waiting for us, and again made us feel very welcome. Thanks for the coffee and the tour of the hanger. A very friendly welcome and we will be back again at some stage. ” |
“ | Visited Pound Green on Saturday the 3rd May 08 on a leg of our round Britain trip from Ireland. We were greeted by Edwin and some resident pilots on arrival at the airfield.
Putting it simply, we were welcomed and greeted by everyone there with open arms and superb hospitality. Edwin ran us up to the local filling station with jerry cans and arranged fuel for us, tea and biscuits awaited us in the clubhouse. This is a superb airfield, set in a lovely setting and Edwin goes out of his way to help, all in all we had a really nice visit and no doubt we will return again over the summer... Well done everyone at Pound Green. ” |
“ | I would like to reply to the review given by Mr. Szemeti and give you the full facts. Mr. Szemeti did indeed PPR but had previously arranged to meet friends at the airfield to give pleasure flights.
The children he mentioned walked onto the airfield when one of the resident pilots was preparing to taxi to the holding point with engine running and prop spinning. There are large safety warning notices that ONLY pilots are allowed airside of the fence. These notices are put there for good reason at this well-run airfield. Mrs Gatehouse as co-owner of the airfield pointed this fact out and was ignored.
There are no landing fees payable at Pound Green for visiting pilots - courtesy of resident pilots who contribute to the upkeep of the airfield - but Mr. Szemeti abused this concession by pre-arranging four pleasure flights without having the decency or courtesy to ask prior permission from the airfield owners. Pound Green is limited to the the number of movements per day but Mr. Szemeti obviously didn't consider that fact. I would respectfully suggest that next time Mr. Szemeti would like to give pleasure flights, that he arranges to meet his friends at Shobdon and pays 5 landing fees and lets his friend's children walk across the active runway there.
A most unfair comment regarding Pound Green from Mr. Szemeti. Judge the facts for youselves. ” |
“ | Nice well layed out field, friendly local pilots and a warm welcome from the fellows we met in the caravan. Tea and coffee offered, toilet and charts available.
The strip runs about 500m on 016, with a large tree and cables at one end, but nothing you can't avoid.
Striclty PPR. Owner (who was absent during our visit) reputedly friendly, wife rude and unpleasant. Avoid arranging to meet friends at the strip, DO NOT meet friends with children (however well behaved). ABOVE ALL, do not take your friends for a flight in the local area. All of the above are strictly forbidden and cause offence, which will be explained to you by the owners wife in the most direct and unpleasant way possible.
Without doubt the most unnecessarily unpleasant experience in 25 years of GA flying. If you are planning on anyting other than simply stopping in and flying off, check explicitly with the owner before arriving. ” |
“ | dropped in on friday evening.on our way down to spamfield, received a warm welcome from mrs gatehouse, who guided us through every thing we needed for an overnight stay, { local pub, good ale and food etc } next morning mr gatehouse saw to it that we had everything we needed for the next leg of our flight. another visit will be on the cards, a warm thankyou to you both. { g-mzaz }. ” |

A very friendly welcome from the airfield owner Edwin Gatehouse, the airfield is set in the beutiful Severn valley 1/2 mile West of Trimpley reservoir. Runway in use today 34 right hand, I only used half the available 400 metres and that in a Quik in nil wind. A nice cuppa as we watched a Red Arrows fly past organised by Edwin? back aboard Tango Charlie fly North up the Severn to Bridgenorth then a Quik 90 to the East and back to Otherton. ” |
“ | A very friendly and helpful airfield owner.
Had fuel ready for me after I phoned ahead and only charged the cost price of the fuel -- so I paid a return visit on my flight homewards! There is a comfortable caravan to rest and make tea and the field is in a beautiful setting. Highly recommended but please do phone ahead for PPR. ” |
