Pilot reviews of Saltby Airfield
“ | Flew in to Saltby today and got a very friendly welcome from the folks at Buckminster Gliding Club who operate the airfield. Had to collect an Ebay Purchase from someone close by :) The main runway is 07/25 which has a vast 1200m x 45m of concrete (which is in excellent condition) and an adjoining 950m x 50m of grass. Today we used the Grass which was available as no gliding was taking place. We were only visiting for a short time so parked next to the Fuel point. Light refreshments are available and a cup of tea was made for us at the clubhouse / office. Normal circuit calls should be made on the Saltby base frequency of 129.975. For obvious reasons powered aircraft should not join overhead. There are no landing fees, but donations towards airfield maintenance will be much appreciated. ” |
“ | Flew in to Saltby today and got a very friendly welcome from the folks at Buckminster Gliding Club who operate the airfield. Saltby is a former World War 2 airfield which was used mainly by the C47 transport aircraft of the 9th USAAF. It was sold off in 1955 and has been a gliding site for many years but powered aircraft are quite welcome on a PPR basis. The main runway is 07/25 which has a vast 1200m x 45m of concrete (which is in excellent condition) and an adjoining 950m x 50m of grass. In addition there is a secondary concrete runway 02/20 which is 800m x 30m. If winch launching is being carried out the gliders will be using the grass. We were only visiting for a short time so parked next to the old double-decker bus that is used as the control point. Light refreshments are available on the bus. As the airfield is just to the northwest of the Cottesmore MATZ, during the week, it is vital to call Cottesmore if arriving from, or departing to, the East or South. If departing towards Cottesmore it is probably advisable to try and make radio contact before take-off. There is an obvious need to keep a sharp eye out for gliders and to give way to them but we had no problems on arrival or departure. Normal circuit calls should be made on the Saltby base frequency of 129.975. For obvious reasons powered aircraft should not join overhead. The clubhouse / office is only manned in the mornings so it’s best to phone for PPR early in the day or, as we did, the day before. There are no landing fees but donations towards airfield maintenance will be much appreciated ” |
