Pilot reviews of Sandhill Farm Airfield

18 Feb 09 - Paul Graham
Having read the comment form Chris Cauwood regarding SandHill Farm, I feel the need to explain our operational position.

Sandhill Farm is licensed by the local authority as a gliding site with only activities associated with gliding. The site is not really open during the week and the airfield gates are locked. Chris would not have been able to exit the airfield without clambering over locked gates and fences. If pilots visit during the week there are no facilities available, unless there is a member of the club onsite - or indeed the pilot would need to call a member to come and open the airfield. If an accident occurs when the airfield is closed, the pilot may not receive the appropriate attention that a fully manned operation would be able to provide. These restrictions are not placed on the general aviation community because we are a "non motorised closed shop" as Chris has called us, but for our local licensing and unattended operation safety concerns. Feel free to call us to look at individual circumstances.

Having business at nearby Shrivenham I always thought it would be excellent to 'drop in' at Sandhill Farm. When the opportunity arose I called for PPR to be routed around two or three people who were to call me back. When the call came, even though I wanted to land mid week (when no gliding took place) it was an unreserved 'NO' We are gliders only - the farmer won't like it etc etc. When tasked with the fact they are in the various Guides, Lockyears Farm Strips and on the 500,000 chart - I was told ' well we shouldn't be' This has put me off the gliding community I'm afraid with their non motorised closed shop attitude. GA is in enough doldrums without pettiness and such a waste of decent landing facilities being denied. If one of their people called me asking to land at my field I'd have the kettle on...
