Cracking day's flying from Wolverhampton HPG to Sandown (Mon 19th June). Usual friendly welcome from A/G service and marshalls. Busy cafe and local bus service into town.

Even got a zone transit/radar service from Solent - my first request - to avoid low level across New Forest.

Great place

Conveniently situated and nice place to go for some aircraft. The runway is unacceptably "corrugated" and the induced oscillations could even cause nosegear damage. Avgas, although supposedly on the site was "unavailable". The marshallers are very friendly and efficient. Did not taste the food but the place looked nice.

Flew into Sandown on Thursday 10 September from Blackpool to take the greyhounds for a short holiday. Very friendly airfield, the grass runway was a little bumpy but not too much so and the £12.00 landing fee very reasonable. Parking was £10/night (we were there for six days) and was well sheltered on three sides by high hedges. (Needed to be too as winds were up to 45kt gusts the last night before departure). Fuel was £1.68, but they had run out and we had to call at Oxford on the return journey instead. Small café on site (CJ’s) which was very friendly and served good food.

Been flying into to Sandown for a number of years, now the dark cloud had lifted from their future this small grass GA Airfield has become a Gem.

You always get a genuine warm friendly welcome and the cafe although basic provide a good selection of hot and cold drinks and snacks.

If your feeling energetic you could even walk down into Sandown town or get a cab! Or just sit and watch the world go by.

Well done and thank you to every one who has made this airfield a pleasure to visit.

The portacabin has gone since my last visit, July 13, now inside the new refurb-ed building. Paid my landing fee 'up' the tower and called for a taxi. £5.80 to Sandown town centre. Walked back to the airfield in 20 mins and followed the public footpath to the centre of the runway.

Flown in twice in the last ten days (both midweek). First time it was quiet but the second time really busy, which is excellent news for Sandown! The runway certainly seems better than it was a few years ago. AG service was superb - friendly and helpful. Carla's new cafe has just opened and she serves up really tasty food - best bacon and eggs ever. In fact all the staff (and fellow pilots) were friendly and welcoming making the whole experience a delight. Congratulations to all the enthusiasts who have "saved" Sandown and who are obviously working very hard to improve all the facilities. Will be putting Sandown on my list of top airfields especially as it is only 30 minutes away from my home base of Thruxton.

After all the uncertainty over the future of Sandown airfield, it's good to see that the Isle of Wight Airport is alive and well.

Everybody seems to be keen to make this one of the most welcoming airfields, from the guys in the tower to the marshal helping you with parking up and the staff in the cafe (a trailer at the moment, but the opening of the new club cafe was about a week away).

The IoW is a great destination, and with Sandown's future (hopefully) being secured, there's no reason not to visit.

Sandown IoW - flew in from Halfpenny Green. A really nice airfield, runway & taxiway were fine. Some rabbit holes & molehills to watch out for - I gather the club volunteers are working on various improvements to the airfield. Made very welcome, and assisted with fuel collection from local Morrisons (thanks to the 4*4 driver & his wife and thanks to Bob for the jerry can). Must remember to allow more fuel for the sight seeing around the island! Half an hour walk into Sandown (beach) for lunch, so didn't try the airport cafe. Landing fee £5 (microlight) good value. Busy airfield. Wonderful spot. Will be back.

Great News for GA. Sandown is under new ownership and very much open for business. A great place to fly to with stunning scenery and a very nice welcome indeed. The Café was still under construction when I last went over there but the temporary café was still producing some proper nice stuff. I am bias because I come from the Isle of Wight and the two guys that own it now along with the rest of the team really deserve your support and you will not be disappointed.

Flew to the Isle of Wight for the first time today and in fact the first airfield that I hadn't flown to with my instructor prior to getting my PPL. Radio service was very friendly and helpful and, knowing it was my first visit, I got turn by turn taxi instructions to a prime parking spot in front of the tower. Fortified by a ham sandwich at the cafe, the friendly cafe lady phoned a taxi to take me into town which has lots of shops and obviously the beach. Will definitely be coming back.

We finally made our second trip to Sandown airfield (from LFFE, Moisselles, France). Although we telephoned before, it was still a relief to hear the tower responding! Great news that the airfield is still in use. It is absolutely a lovely airfield and the people are as nice as they were a couple of years ago. We did not use the café, sorry for that, we visited the Sandown beach and boulevard and we had some great weather.

We will definitely come back and take sure we have enough AVgas on board for our return. And we will recommend this destination as much as we can!

Flew into Sandown from White Waltham last Thursday (28th June) for the first time for a while. I wasn't sure what to expect after hearing all sorts of stories about the place and was delighted to find that all is well. The cafe is now on the south side since a month ago and exactly the sort of grub the lunchtime visitors want. Not three course gourmet feasts but light, tasty and inexpensive and served up cheerfully by the same lady who ran the restaurant on the other side last year. Lovely grass runway and if you find the hangar where they're rebuilding Spitfires then there's another treat to savour.

Visited Sandown on a fairly quiet Tuesday afternoon. The airfield is most definitely open for business and has a large, pleasant cafe/restaurant with a some outside seating also. There is NO FUEL. Runway surface was good; taxiways were a little rough in places but perfectly serviceable. Very warm welcome from both the A/G radio and the ladies in the cafe who take your landing fee (£12.50 for a PA28). If anything, Sandown is in a better location than Bembridge in as much as it is closer to the town, seafront and railway station, all of which are within walking distance if you're reasonably fit. Don't forget it's uphill going back though. I believe there is a bus service which passes nearby the airfield also. A tip for anyone unfamiliar with the area: Solent Radar are now very amenable to granting VFR transits along Southampton Water between Calshott and Totton. In fact, I was offered this route without even asking; the views of Southampton and the docks are fantastic.

My wife and I made a flight from Buckinghamshire to Sandown airport on Friday 2nd September and found Sandown a delightful airfield to visit. The radio service was most efficient, the welcome very warm, the restaurant was good with comfortable inside and outside areas and the condition of the runway and taxiways was very good.

BUT pilots please be aware that in spite of the Flight Guide and a Sandown website saying Avgas was available, this was not the case. I was not told during my PPR that fuel would not be available and when I asked to refuel I was told that there was no Avgas available anywhere on the island.

I would thoroughly recommend Sandown as a superb field to visit, but please ensure you have enough fuel for your return trip.

A very friendly welcome at Sandown, parked up and refreshed at specialist flying school on the north side http://www.flyingschool.com/

Marshalled into a parking spot! That would cost hundreds at a bigger airport!

Stopped here enroute Perranporth - > Plymouth - > Sandown-> Lydd -> Elstree (Home) yesterday 29th August 2011. It's a great airfield and you just get the feeling that everyone there is so keen and enthusiastic! Lots of helpful people in Hi-Vis showing you where to park, lots of people quite evidently having fun and enjoying the place. When we arrived from Plymouth it was a breath of fresh air after the moribund atmosphere there. Loved it and will return to spend more than just the modest landing fee and a couple of coffees. The airfield deserves support so if you can please visit them. Top marks for friendliness but above all a fabulous atmosphere. Loved it!

Sandown is OPEN (as at 18 Jan 2011, anyway). There is an injunction preventing it from closing, so we're alright at the moment. It's a great place to visit - walk down to the sea in about 40 mins. Take your swimming trunks or cossie if it's summer! The Flying School building is modern and has all the facilities you need, plus a smart cafe serving drinks and food, and can be found on the North side where the new hangars and industrial buildings are. Phone Carla in the cafe from 11 am Thurs to Sunday, or 11.30 am on Mon to Weds to get PPR, which is essential. Use it or lose it!

Sandown is still open for business as usual.A high court injunction is in force and the airfield will remain open for the foreseeable future. The runway and taxiway to the north are in good order and are being maintained regularly. In addition the Specialist flying school has opened their cafe and hot food and drinks are available 7 days a week.Landing fee is £10 paid at the cafe, situated midway down the northern taxiway.PPR is essential 01983 402402 with blind calls on the 119.27 frequency, although at weekends there may be a limited radio service courtesy of Henry.Help to preserve this airfield which has been open since 1937,pay them a visit.

I visited Sandown today for some food after getting to the Thorney Island fly in too late for food. On landing my tail spring broke (always happens overseas)!! The people there could not have been more helpful immediately helping lift and push, searching runway for parts, putting in hangar and sorting out some parts to get me off home in no time at all. A massive thank you to them all and I shall now make a point of visiting regularly to help save the airfield.

It is still Open. Met a Sandown airfield resident today (at Fowlmere) and he confirmed that its still open to visiting pilots and they want people to fly in. Call up the Specialist Flying School for PPR on 01983 402402 beforehand and the details of how to fly in will be provided. apparenlty their cafe is open to visitors as well. Its a great airfield so lets keep making use of it

Flew into Sandown for the second time in 5 years .. what a change. No manned control tower, no care of the runway and taxiways, no fuel and long departed is that rather good restaurant. Sadly the investing people involved want to see the airfield closed, that is obvious. I hear that the aircraft is closing at the end of THIS month.. very sad. I suggest you fly in but a word of warning. When I few in there was a very "OK Coral" feel to the place, very short circuits, very little, if any radio calls .. this may catch non-resident and even local pilots out. Keep a VERY good look out. Local pilots are taking up arms to fight the closure and I wish them wholeharted success...

Visited Sandown on Friday and as has been said in the previous post it's well worth a visit before it closes. The closure date is now 1st October 2010!. There is a petition which I signed, as have many others, hoping for a reversal of this decision. The airfield it's is still ok with the runway in good condition but watch the taxiways for molehills. The landing fee is reasonable and snacks and drinks are available in the portacabin.

Things have changes at Sandown, Isle of Wight, but its still (maybe even more so) well worth a visit. No longer has its own ATZ and its unlicensed. as a result it now needs to be treated like a private airstrip - blind calls on he published frequency and very good look out / listening to other traffic. Not a problem on the day I flew in though - 5 aircraft slotted themselves into the circuit within about 5 minutes of my arrival, including 2 flexwings, and it all went very well. As usual, lots of care needed in view of Bembridge only a couple of miles away (i gave them a call on the way in to let them know where I was). The runway was in reasonable condition despute the recent wet weather, and there were tea and snacks available in the portacabin behind the tower (which is where the reasonable landing fees are paid as well.) Apparently Avgas is normally available, but not on the day I flew in so best to ask when you telephone for PPR. Visit while you still can - this is another airfield at serious risk of being lost.

First time to sandown this weekend. A lovely little airstrip on the IOW with a grass runway, although i cannot seem to justify the same landing fee as Bembridge, If i had to choose one or the other i would have to say bembridge for the price and facilities. Hopefully i shall be proved wrong when the restaurant is restored. Well worth a visit. Still good value for money.

We visited Sandown on Saturday, a nice wide grass runway, a little bumpy in places, keep the weight of the nose and you'll be fine. Plenty of parking. Nice friendly people in the tower and no delays or queuing for the runway !. Close to Sandown and only a 5 minute £5 taxi ride to a lovely beach. Passengers commented on poor standard of 'facilities' at the airfield when compared to Bembridge, but I can see the foundations for a new club house, lets hope to see that soon. I'll be back here, it has a much more rural feel to it than Bembridge, and the kids say the beaches are nicer at Sandown !!

Visited Sandown a few weeks ago for my wife's first trip in the new [second] love of my life. Sandown staff very friendly, as ever. A call whilst downwind ensured that they had summoned a taxi which was ready by the time we'd chocked up and signed in.

A taxi into town and lunch on the beach was then followed by a very pleasant flight back to Old Sarum via the Needles.

The strip at Sandown is wide and flat, although rather prone to waterlogging in the winter. There is also a footpath that crosses it at more or less the centre point. An astonishing number of walkers seem to think that it works on the same principle as a zebra crossing. It's only a matter of time, I would have thought, before one of them causes an accident.

All in all, Sandown is an excellent little airfield and I thoroughly recommend a visit. I do hope that they get the restaurant rebuilt soon. It's a bit of an eyesore at the moment.

With Antonietta and Ralphetino we take delight in the friendly place unfortunately the previous week 4 people killed there so we were more careful than usual on take off despite the bad news very friendly place nice food but Antonietta upset with the puddings asked for Italian quality and got his just deserts but Ralphetino finished both his puddings and those that were left by the rest of us!! well worth a visit and thank you Sandown ...

I flew into Sandown on the 8th July from Andrewsfield in my Jabiru, flew along the coast from Newhaven to Selsea and then across to the IOW. The views were great. The ATC is brilliant, coping well with lots of traffic, the bacon bap and mug of tea was also great value. I really reccomend Sandown it is a great destination.

I love Sandown. Always made to feel extremely welcome. It's a great example of a destination that would cost a lot more, and take a lot longer to reach if you didn't fly. (Ferry etc).

ATC are very helpful and relaxed.

Visited Sandown yesterday, 2nd June 2007,for the sixth time this last year. This is a top destination as you get a great sense of achievement, having arrived somewhere which would normaly be imposiible to visit just for a day trip.

Instead of doing the usual trip to Shanklin to scoff cream teas I did a long walk for the day, around the circuit plus up into the Downs to the south of the field.

I thoroughly recommend this place, a first class visit.

Now that the new restaurant has been built this is a really good destination. The runway is a good length and in decent condition but you need to watch out for the displaced threshold and footpath on 05

Food is reasonably priced and the landing fees are good value, especially I have found if you want to bash out some touch and goes.

Wonderful. Did the second leg of my qualifying X-Country into IOW Sandown. I loved the "welcome to Sandown" on landing....

Smashing place and facilities. Bit of a wicked approach onto 23 in a x-wind, but worth the effort.

Sandown is a lovely airfield, and one that all GA pilots must try to visit.

The cafe was brilliant, although, we did not stay there, we paid a fiver to have a taxi into Sandown, and have lunch in the Ocean Deck restaurant by the sea. Fresh fish every day.

The landing fee was £10, and the fuel was £1.37. On Sunday's, they have live music, and a carvery at the airport, so well worth it for Sunday Lunch.

Visited Sandown on 2nd March. Diverted from Goodwood due to the [excellent] weather - wondered afterwards whether that should qualify for a free landing, decided not....

The field has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere (it was pretty much deserted mid-afternoon mid-week) and we were made welcome then left to enjoy ourselves.

With the footpath crossing the runway mentioned in AIP I spent too long looking for it. It's not too obvious from the air.

We didn't get to try the food at the restaurant so next time I'll go for rather than after lunch. However, the tea was good and hot.

I flew into Sandown 28th January 2006. Was a windy day and diverted from Bembridge. A/G very welcoming and helpful, excellent restaurant, saw a few adverts for functions which take place in the club house, and will keep my eye on the website!

Definitely a must go again!

Took a Warrior into Sandown today, Definitely worth a visit. Nice clubhouse with friendly staff. Interesting selection of aircraft coming and going. Good food. Plenty of parking. Really easy to find and some great scenery around nearby. Runway was a bit soft and squidgy in places.

I flew into Sandown today. What a great place. A warm welcome, a nice new clubhouse and very easy procedures. £5 gets you a cab into town with Lake cabs.

We will definitely be re-visiting Sandown.

Flew into Sandown last week (PA28) easy to locate, great welcome, excellent food and service. I can recommend this airfield as a place to visit and take the opportunity to fly around the south of the island.

Visited Sandown this weekend.

First impressions on landing were, what a well turned out airfield. The runway, taxiways and parking areas all had immaculately mown grass. The new clubhouse was most impressive.

Lovely raised veranda to sit on and watch the airfield from. I did not partake of the food there but the bar was well stocked and the staff friendly and helpful.

£5 cab ride into Sandown with Lake Taxis "See Pooleys" for the number. Nice places to eat on the seafront (ask the cabbie for a recommendation) we went to a lobster place where the food was good and they seemed to have a very pleasing staff recruitment policy. All the female staff were VERY good looking which all went along to make the ambiance nice.

A walk around town and a few pounds in the amusements then back to the airfield.

On departure flew along the south of the island to the needles and then turned for home (EGTR).

All in all a very nice day.

It was a toss up between Bembridge and Sandown and, having been to Sandown, I can imagine that Bembridge is a nicer place to go. The only plus for Bembridge is the hard surface runway so if it is a soggy day then Bembridge may be the only option.

I can recommend Sandown to anyone. Well done the Sandown team. Keep it up!!

Simon

Landed at Bournemouth today on my solo cross country qualifying flight for my PPL. I was nervous about visiting a busy airport solo in controlled airspace on a Saturday morning but the air traffic controllers were so friendly and helpful that I can't wait to go there again. I also found the staff at Bournemouth Handling to be extremely helpful although the landing fee of £20.56 for a Cessna 150 was more than I've ever paid before. I'd like to say a big thank you to anyone reading this from Bournmouth ATC or Bournemouth Handling for making my solo qualifying flight so enjoyable. From Bournemouth I went on to Sandown, Isle of Wight where again the welcome could not have been better and the landing fee was only £10.

Went to Sandown Today to see the new restuarant. The decor is very nice, in fact so is the decking! But you pay for it, the food is very very pricey and very below average. A processed chicken burger £5.50, or how about £22 for a steak! All washed down with £10 to land. Take my advice, go to France!

Fly in a lot as it is just over the Solent for me, about 30 minutes flight in my microlight. Good site but beware the wind is always stronger on the IOW than the main land coast. £6 landing fee for microlight is a bit steep, haggle for £4 say its all you have, you can then get bacon roll with the money you saved. Their Radio frequency has changed recently so find it out before you set off. If you are flying a microlight don’t park near the fuel because the helicopters might blow your wing over.

Flew to Sandown for lunch on 9th Feb '04. Bacon butties are well worth having, and there is a very good menu in the cafe if you want something more substantial.
Due to the winter wet spell, the runway dimensions are restricted to 600m in length, and a width of 30m. These are clearly marked by black and white marker boards. Beware of sticky areas on the northern taxiway.
Very nice, friendly airfield, good facilities, and a popular destination(justifiably)on a nice day.

A lovely airfield. Very good A/G staff, friendly and accomodating. I go over quite often from Goodwood for a cuppa and a bacon butty (they really are good). An interesting variety of A/C based there too. Watch out for Bembridge when approaching from Portsmouth. Runway slope at threshold can be a bit deceptive, leading to some unusually long flares, but usually good landings (if a bit far down the runway) but not too rough.

Went to Sandown last weekend (July 03). A very nice flat grass strip with just a few bumps. Approaches are good although Sandown is very close on the deadside. At £8 for a 172, I thought it good value.

Sandown itself is a short taxi ride away but if you stay on the airfield, the bacon & egg sarnies are well worth trying.

I'll be going back soon.
