Brighton City Airport (Shoreham) (EGKA)
I have been visiting Shoreham Airport as an enthusiast since 1995. It seems the good days have gone - I think they went with the arrival of private ownership. To echo someone else's sentiments, Shoreham International is never going to happen so wouldn't it be a good idea to start encouraging the recreational flyer again?
My advice to anybody who wishes to call in at the airport for a relaxing cup of coffee is not to bother at weekends. It's hit or miss as to whether you'll get one. The main restaurant is frequently closed for weddings, birthdays, engagements, retirements and other non-aviation related celebrations. The Airside 2 facility opens on a whim. Maybe the airport management should reconsider the restaurant franchise next time round.
It's all a great shame. Back in the 1990s we spent many an enjoyable weekend at Shoreham. Will these days return?

“ | I’ve wanted to visit Shoreham for ages and the opportunity for a few days away in Eastbourne with the greyhounds gave us the opportunity. We flew in from Exeter on 20 September and the arrival was easy even with a reducing cloudbase (700’) and showers. The airfield itself is just as wonderful as others have said. I’d love to have a tour around the terminal – it looked stunning. Although the web site states dogs are not allowed into the café, we took them into what we thought was the terminal reception but which is now an extra part if the café and they had no problem at all. (Just as well as by now it was absolutely thrashing it down outside with rain and we had all our baggage with us!)
We hired a car from Enterprise at Hove who picked us up from the airport (and dropped us off 3 days later) at no extra charge. It makes the ability to use the airport for a short break so much easier. The rate was only around £65 for three days hire (Ford Focus) and was well worth it.
The café was superb and they made a fuss of the dogs (which always gets ‘Brownie Points’ from us). All in all, a lovely destination with easy hard-standing parking, good ATC and a very different terminal building full of history. ” |
